The grand satirical festival of allegorical floats in the province of Taranto
In the heart of the Taranto province, Massafra celebrates one of the longest-running and most cherished carnivals in all of Puglia every year. Born in 1951, the Massafra Carnival has built a solid identity over time, defined by satire, popular joy, and artisanal mastery. The event is now recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a Historical Carnival, a title that certifies its cultural value and the continuity of its tradition.
The beating heart of the festival is the parade of large papier-mรขchรฉ allegorical floats, true works of ephemeral art created by local carnival associations. Alongside the floats, masked groups and traditional character masks march in a colorful procession that transforms the city center into an open-air theater. Social and political satire remains the common thread that, edition after edition, distinguishes the Massafra Carnival.
The parades wind along the traditional route that crosses Via Magna Grecia, Corso Roma, and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the hub of city life. Along the path, crowds gather near musical stages and entertainment areas, while the squares host concerts, masquerade balls, and shows for families and children.
With its days of celebration spread between late January and February, the Massafra Carnival is an unmissable destination for those who want to experience the most authentic atmosphere of the Puglian Carnival, alongside the great events in Putignano and other carnivals across the peninsula. The organization is managed by the Municipality of Massafra with the involvement of local associations and businesses, following the spirit summarized by the event's slogan: Everyone is a protagonist, no one is a spectator.
The 73rd edition of the Massafra Carnival enlivened the city with a rich calendar, opening as early as January 17 with the blessing of the animals at the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate and the opening of the Carnival Village. The highlight of the festival was concentrated between February 8 and 17, 2026, with the two grand parades of allegorical floats along Via Magna Grecia, Corso Roma, and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
The competition featured ten allegorical floats (seven in the first category and three in the second), four masked groups, and four character masks. There was no shortage of concerts, theatrical performances, the national 'Winter Queen' competition, and moments dedicated to children, in line with the participatory spirit of the slogan: Everyone is a protagonist, no one is a spectator.
Massafra is located in the province of Taranto, along the S.S. 7 Appia road, and is easily accessible from the A14 motorway (Massafra exit) and the railway station on the Taranto-Bari line. The parades take place in the city center, between Via Magna Grecia, Corso Roma, and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.
Access to the parades and events in the squares is free.
Program and updates are available on the official Massafra Carnival channels and the Municipality of Massafra website.
