The historic Friulian carnival of Remanzacco, since 1921 with allegorical floats and masks
Among the longest-running Friulian carnivals, the Mascarade of Remanzâs in Remanzacco — a municipality in the province of Udine along the state road to Cividale — has been a living tradition for over a century. Its origins date back to 1921, when it essentially consisted of a theatrical performance in the Friulian language staged in the town square on the last Sunday of Carnival by the Compagnia della Mascherata. In 1929, Bocâl was born, the symbolic mask that still embodies the cheerful and carefree spirit of Friulian culture today.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that, on Sunday afternoon, travel along Via De Gasperi, Via Roma, and Piazza Paolo Diacono. Amidst music, confetti, and masks, historical local entities such as the Banda di Orzano and the folk group Chei di Bocâl also parade, alongside schools, associations, and local groups. The festival is preceded in the morning by creative workshops for children and enlivened by itinerant performances with stilt walkers, soap bubbles, and clowning.
The most anticipated moment is the grand finale in Piazza Paolo Diacono: the satirical dialogue between the traditional masks Bocâl and Cresime, a back-and-forth in Friulian that, with irony, comments on the year's events, followed by the awards ceremony for the masked groups. It is in this rite that the deep soul of the Mascarade is perceived: a community carnival, made of language, satire, and local identity.
Organized by the Municipality of Remanzacco in collaboration with the Pro Loco, the Mascarade combines the roots of Friulian tradition with an open and inclusive approach, capable of involving children, families, and visitors. An unmissable event for those who want to experience the authentic Carnival of Friuli, far from the major circuits but rich in history.
For 2026, the Mascarade of Remanzâs returns on Sunday, March 1st, confirming the formula that blends tradition and spectacle: workshops and entertainment for children in the morning, a parade of allegorical floats in the afternoon, and the concluding rite of the satirical dialogue between the town's historic masks. Among the participants are the Banda di Orzano, the Chei di Bocâl group, and vintage motorcycles from the Roberto Tonutti Motorcycle Museum.
