The Marzolina and Olive Festival brings the central Piazza Roma to life on a mid-August evening, drawing visitors from across the Liri Valley and lower Lazio. Now in its fortieth year, the event is organized by the Pro Loco of Esperia with the support of the local municipal administration.

The marzolina, a Slow Food Presidium cheese

The undisputed star of the festival is the marzolina, a small goat cheese with a distinctive elongated cylindrical shape. Its name comes from the month of March, when goats traditionally began producing milk. Historically produced on the slopes of the Ausoni Mountains, right in the territory of Esperia, the marzolina is now a Slow Food Presidium and is listed among the Traditional Agri-food Products of Lazio. It can be enjoyed fresh or aged on wooden racks and preserved in glass jars, sometimes in oil: it offers a flavor that is initially sweet and buttery, becoming bold and slightly spicy with aging.

Olives and local products

Alongside the cheese, the festival highlights olives and extra virgin olive oil from the Aurunci hills, together with other typical products of Ciociarian gastronomy. The food stalls set up in the square offer marzolina paired with local olives, traditional peasant dishes, and local desserts, providing a culinary journey that tells the story of Esperia's agricultural identity and pastoral heritage.
