The spiciest festival in Salento, held in the historic center of Ruffano

MARU – The Chili Pepper Festival is the food and wine event that, every early September, transforms the historic center of Ruffano, in the heart of lower Salento in the province of Lecce, into the capital of the chili pepper. Founded in 2013 and having grown with every edition, the event celebrates one of the undisputed stars of the Salento and Apulian table: the spicy chili, presented in a thousand varieties, flavors, and shades of color.
The name Maru in the Salento dialect refers to something "bitter," "strong," or intense: a tribute to the bold character of the chili pepper and the people of this land. For two days, the squares and alleys of the village fill with stalls, themed lights, and scenic displays, creating a journey that weaves together gastronomy, music, art, and culture.
Along the streets of the historic center, visitors can admire and purchase chili plants from all over the world, from the most decorative to the most extreme varieties, and sample special dishes at the food stalls set up in the main squares, from Piazza Nazario Sauro to Piazza San Francesco. There is no shortage of typical local products and tastings curated in collaboration with the sommeliers of AIS Lecce.
The adrenaline-filled heart of the festival is the unmissable spicy endurance contest, a fiery challenge that attracts brave contenders and a large audience every year, ready to cheer on the participants as they tackle the most fearsome chili peppers.
MARU is much more than a food festival: it is a widespread event that enlivens the village with live concerts, roaming bands, folk music and balfolk performances, author meet-and-greets, and art exhibitions. The creative space MaruLab offers craft workshops for all ages, ranging from pottery and botanical watercolor to basket weaving and cyanotype.
Organized by the associations Made in Soap and Idee in Movimento with the support of the Municipality of Ruffano, the event is twinned with the Italian Chili Pepper Academy and has become a staple of the Salento summer calendar. MARU promotes the historic center of Ruffano, local small businesses, and the traditions of Puglia, offering residents and tourists an authentic experience where the spicy chili becomes a celebration, a community, and a discovery.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of MARU – The Chili Pepper Festival have not yet been announced. In previous years, the festival took place in early September in the historic center of Ruffano, in the province of Lecce, with two evenings dedicated to the chili pepper, featuring food stalls, a spicy endurance contest, exhibitions, MaruLab workshops, and concerts spread across the squares.
As soon as the organizers (Made in Soap and Idee in Movimento) publish the official information for the 2026 edition, this page will be updated with dates, times, and the full program.
