Eggplant in all its forms in the seaside village of Massa Lubrense, following the Assumption sea procession
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Eggplant Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Marina della Lobra, a small fishing village that is part of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. It takes place in August, following the festivities in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and turns the small harbor and the panoramic church square into a tasting trail entirely dedicated to the eggplant.
The most evocative moment of the festival arrives on August 15th, the day of the Assumption. In the late afternoon, a solemn mass is celebrated—traditionally dedicated to emigrants and presided over by a member of the Friars Minor, the community that guards the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Lobra—and at its conclusion, a procession accompanies the image of the Madonna through the narrow streets of the village. The procession then continues by sea: a long parade of boats sets sail from the Marina della Lobra harbor, touches the fishing villages of the coast, and reaches the Vervece rock, the symbolic rock of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. It is one of the most beautiful sights of the Lubrense Ferragosto, with decorated boats, singing, and the silhouette of Capri on the horizon.
The following day, devotion gives way to the table. The food stalls open in the evening, usually around 9:00 PM, and offer eggplant prepared in every possible way according to the Sorrento Peninsula recipe book:
All accompanied by local wines and products, in a setting where the view of the gulf is worth as much as the dish.
The spectacular part of the festival takes place on the panoramic church square, where traditional Neapolitan folk music is performed: tammorre, tarantellas, and ancient songs that get residents and tourists dancing until late at night. In recent years, groups and artists from the Campanian folk scene have performed, with evenings lasting over two hours amidst applause and dancing on the churchyard.
The Eggplant Festival is part of a particularly rich summer calendar: the Municipality of Massa Lubrense, with its seventeen hamlets, offers a long series of festivals dedicated to local products from late June to mid-August—from the Monticchio snail to the Acquara zucchini, from the Termini potato to the Torca tomato, up to the historic Limoni in Festa dedicated to the oval lemon of Massa. The eggplant ideally closes this season, at the most intense moment of the Lubrense summer.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Eggplant Festival in Marina della Lobra, a hamlet of Massa Lubrense (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania). The 2026 summer calendar released by the local Pro Loco so far only lists a few events, while the August festivals are usually announced shortly before the event.
The event has followed the same pattern for years: the festivities in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, with the late afternoon liturgical celebration and the procession by land and sea to the Vervece rock, and the Eggplant Festival the following evening, with food stalls and folk music on the panoramic church square. It is therefore likely that the event will take place in mid-August in 2026 as well, but confirmation rests with the organizers.
Marina della Lobra is a coastal hamlet of Massa Lubrense (NA), on the Sorrento Peninsula. By car: A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, exit Castellammare di Stabia, then SS145 Sorrentina to Sorrento and the provincial road to Massa Lubrense; from the town center, you descend to the Marina via a narrow winding road. By train: Circumvesuviana Naples-Sorrento line, Sorrento terminus, then EAV bus to Massa Lubrense.
The village is small and parking spaces are very limited: it is best to leave your car in the main town of Massa Lubrense and walk down the panoramic staircase. In recent editions, a shuttle service from Piazza Vescovado has been activated starting around 8:30 PM on the evening of the festival.
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings are paid for on-site at the stalls: price lists are not published online, as it is a festival managed directly by the village community.
Accommodation is concentrated in the main town of Massa Lubrense, in Sant'Agata sui due Golfi, and in Sorrento, all just a few kilometers away: B&Bs, farmhouses, and small hotels. In mid-August, booking well in advance is essential.
