Three evenings of flavor, street art, and maritime devotion at the Marina di Meta
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Meta Mare in... Festa is the grand end-of-summer event in the Municipality of Meta, a small seaside town on the Sorrento Peninsula, in the province of Naples, Campania. Every year, around September 12th, the ancient village of Marina di Meta and the promenade overlooking Alimuri beach fill with food stalls, music, and street performers, in a festival born from the town's deep bond with the sea.
The event is organized by the Municipal Administration of Meta together with the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene, under the patronage of the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy. Meta Mare in... Festa is officially recognized as an UNPLI 'Quality Event': a prestigious distinction that, in all of Campania, belongs exclusively to this festival.
The spectacular heart of the celebration is the Meta Buskers Festival, a street art showcase that transforms the promenade into an open-air stage starting at 8:00 PM. Acrobats, jugglers, illusionists, sand artists, live painters, acoustic musicians, handpan players, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and puppet theater rotate through various stations. There are no tickets and no assigned seating: you simply walk, pause to watch an artist, and continue your stroll toward the sea.
The 2025 edition featured performances by Humana Theatre, Mariachi Tierra de Mรฉxico, Lo Sviolinista, Chumbala Cachumbala, Anima Meridionalis, and performer Yuri Menna, alongside evenings of Cuban music and dance and a concert by the Voice Pan Duo.
Starting around 7:00 PM, the gastronomic trail opens: Meta's restaurants, pizzerias, and beach clubs set up stations along the Marina, offering a unique menu. In 2025, the tasting ticket cost 15 euros and included two first courses, two second courses, a glass of wine, dessert or fruit, and coffee or limoncello.
The festival is more than just entertainment; the date is no coincidence. On September 12th, Meta celebrates the Madonna del Lauro, the town's patron saint and protector of sailors. This is why the event takes place on the Marina, facing the gulf: for generations, Meta's families lived by navigation and shipbuilding, and the festival keeps that identity alive, making the Sorrento Peninsula more than just a seaside destination.
A significant part of the program is dedicated to children, with free workshops available by reservation: from 'Little Pastry Chefs' for kids aged 8 to 11, to fresh pasta and gnocchi-making classes, as well as themed villages and entertainment along the promenade. Spots are limited, and registration opens a few days prior on the Pro Loco website.
The event concludes with a pyromusical show over the sea at approximately 11:30 PM: the fireworks reflect on the water in front of Alimuri and are visible from the entire coast, from Piano di Sorrento to Vico Equense. It is the most anticipated and photographed moment of the entire festival.
Meta Mare in... Festa is one of the few occasions where the Sorrento Peninsula feels like a real town again in September: tourists and residents share the same promenade, the same tables, and the same shows. The weather is still summery, the sea is warm, the August crowds have dispersed, and coastal prices become more reasonable. It is the perfect opportunity to combine the festival with a day trip to Sorrento, Positano, or Pompeii, all of which are easily accessible.
The Municipality of Meta and the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene have not yet published the official program for Meta Mare in... Festa 2026. However, the event is held regularly around September 12th, the date of the Madonna del Lauro feast, and maintains the same structure year after year: a gastronomic trail along the Marina, the Meta Buskers Festival on the promenade, children's workshops, show cooking, and a closing pyromusical show.
Dates and the detailed program are typically released in late August or the very first days of September on the prolocometa.com website and the official Facebook page of the event.
By train: The Circumvesuviana (Naples-Sorrento line, EAV) stops at the Meta station, just a few minutes' walk from the Marina. By car: Take the Castellammare di Stabia exit on the A3 motorway, then follow the SS145 Sorrentina; parking in town is limited during the festival evenings, so it is best to arrive early or use the train. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport, then take the Curreri Viaggi shuttle or a train via Naples. By sea: Hydrofoils and ferries to Sorrento, then a 10-minute bus ride.
Free admission to the entire event and the Meta Buskers Festival performances. The gastronomic trail requires a separate purchase: in 2025, the tasting ticket was 15 euros. Children's workshops are free with mandatory reservation.
