Marian devotion, processions, and open-air evenings in the Borgonuovo hamlet of Teano
Some festivals do not need massive crowds to be truly authentic. The Maria SS. della Libera Festival in Borgonuovo, a tiny hamlet in the Municipality of Teano in the province of Caserta, is one of them: a few dozen houses at about 185 meters above sea level, bordering Caianello and Vairano Patenora, which fill up once a year with people from nearby hamlets and towns across the Alto Casertano. It is a community festival that marks the transition from winter to spring and brings those living away back home.
The Marian title della Libera is among the most widespread in Southern Italy and has roots in an ancient episode: tradition links it to the liberation of Benevento from the Byzantine siege in the 7th century, and iconography depicts the Virgin with a cross imprinted on the palm of her right hand. From there, the devotion spread throughout Campania and southern Lazio, with sanctuaries and churches dedicated to her in dozens of towns: in the Caserta area alone, there are celebrations in Carano di Sessa Aurunca, San Tammaro, and, of course, Borgonuovo di Teano, where the parish church bears the name of Maria Santissima della Libera.
Unlike other towns that celebrate the Libera in May, July, or October, Borgonuovo maintains a movable date linked to Easter: the festival falls on the first Monday after Easter, known as Easter Monday. The highlight is the morning procession, when the image of the Madonna leaves the church and travels through the village streets accompanied by the faithful. These are the timeless gestures: preparing the altar, decorating the route, and families waiting on their doorsteps for the procession to pass.
Alongside the religious aspect is the secular one, which focuses on the evenings: an open-air space in the heart of the hamlet hosts musical performances, usually starting around 9:00 PM. The repertoire is the classic one of Campanian village festivals, ranging from ballroom dancing to tribute bands dedicated to historic Italian music groups. It is the moment when the festival becomes intergenerational: people dance, meet, and stay in the square until late at night. In 2026, the program featured two consecutive evenings, on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.
It is worth coming here for the history as well. It was precisely in Borgonuovo, according to the most widely accepted historical reconstruction, that the famous meeting between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II took place in 1860, marking the end of the Expedition of the Thousand: the spot identified by scholars is the San Cataldo bridge, just a few hundred meters from the Libera church. A detail that gives this small hamlet enormous symbolic weight in the history of Italian Unification, adding to the heritage of the Teano area, with the Roman theater of Teanum Sidicinum and the historic center of the main town just a few kilometers away.
In 2026, Easter fell on Sunday, April 5, and the Maria SS. della Libera Festival was spread over two consecutive days, concluding on Monday, April 6, the Easter Monday which is traditionally the day of the festival in Borgonuovo di Teano.
The program of performances, announced by the local Caserta press at the end of March, featured two evenings starting at 9:00 PM. Easter Sunday was the turn of Lisciomix 5, a group dedicated to ballroom dancing and popular dance music; on Easter Monday, Rosa Nomade, a recognized tribute band to the Nomadi, took the stage with the historic repertoire of the Emilian group.
As every year, the devotional part accompanied the secular one: the hamlet's community gathered around the church dedicated to Maria Santissima della Libera for the traditional morning procession, before the evening festivities in the square. A consolidated rhythm that makes this festival one of the most attended spring events in the Teano area, in the province of Caserta.
Program reconstructed from local press announcements; religious service times were released by the parish.
Borgonuovo, a hamlet of the Municipality of Teano (CE), at an altitude of about 185 meters in the northeastern part of the municipal territory, bordering Caianello and Vairano Patenora. The celebrations take place around the church of Maria SS. della Libera and in the open-air spaces of the village.
The festival falls every year during the Easter period: the date is therefore movable and changes from year to year. The procession is held in the morning, and musical performances take place in the evening, usually from 9:00 PM.
Religious celebrations and evening events take place in public spaces; local sources do not indicate any ticket office or advance booking.
Early April evenings: in the hills, the temperature drops after sunset, so it is best to bring a jacket. Visitors from out of town can combine the festival with a visit to the main town of Teano, featuring its Roman theater and historic center.
