Contemporary theatre festival at the Teatro Comunale Salvatore Cicero in Cefalù
Marea – moto continuo is a contemporary theatre festival held at the Teatro Comunale Salvatore Cicero in Cefalù, a Norman gem overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Promoted by the Municipality of Cefalù and directed by director and playwright Santi Cicardo, the festival presents a programme of free performances that, from February to May, transforms the historic town theatre into a place of encounter, emotion, and collective discussion.
Following an exploratory first edition, Marea returns with a clearer vision: the title «moto continuo» (perpetual motion) evokes the idea of a theatre that never stops, constantly moving like the waves of the sea that lap against Cefalù. The artistic direction selects texts and performers capable of questioning the present, alternating original dramaturgy, major monologues, and tributes to Sicilian culture. The theatre thus becomes a space for civic engagement, where the audience is invited to reflect alongside the artists on the themes of our time.
The heart of the festival consists of six performances with free admission, subject to seat availability. The programme brings together companies and actors from the Sicilian and national landscape, balancing well-known island theatre figures with significant national productions, blending established names with new voices of the contemporary scene.
As the beating heart of the town's cultural life, the Teatro Comunale Salvatore Cicero provides the ideal setting for a festival aimed at bringing the general public closer to quality theatre. The free admission, supported by the municipal administration, reinforces the popular and inclusive vocation of the project, designed to offer locals and visitors a regular appointment with contemporary performance.
Nestled in one of Sicily's most beautiful villages, at the foot of the Rocca and dominated by the majestic UNESCO-listed Norman Cathedral, the Marea festival enriches Cefalù's cultural offering even during the winter and spring months, when the town experiences a more intimate and authentic atmosphere, far from the summer beach tourism. It is a perfect opportunity to discover this Madonie town through the universal language of theatre.
The second edition of the Marea – moto continuo festival is held at the Teatro Comunale Salvatore Cicero in Cefalù from 6 February to 10 May 2026, with six free events starting at 6:30 PM. The artistic direction is entrusted to Santi Cicardo, with the support of the Municipality of Cefalù.
The programme brings together some of the most representative names of the Sicilian and national theatre scene, in a journey ranging from tributes to singer-songwriters to scientific and civil reflection.
