Three days of Marchigiana IGP beef, music, and street performers in Capriglia Irpina
The Marchigiana IGP Festival is one of the youngest and most popular food and wine events in the Irpinia region. It takes place in Capriglia Irpina, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. The event is hosted by the historic Macelleria Ruta, a family business led by Antonio Ruta. Since its debut in 2024, the festival has quickly become a landmark for food lovers across the region, who travel up to the village's 575-meter altitude every year for a weekend entirely dedicated to premium meat.
At the heart of the festival is the Marchigiana, a cattle breed protected by the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status and raised on the pastures of Alta Irpinia. It is a lean, flavorful meat that the organizers personally select and process in their shop. This short supply chain—from the farm to the butcher's counter and straight to the grill—is one of the key factors that has earned the event its reputation among enthusiasts. During the festival, the Marchigiana beef is served in every form, from premium cuts to more casual street-food style dishes.
The slogan chosen by Macelleria Ruta perfectly captures the event's spirit: three days condensed into one big, convivial bite. The grill serves up sliced steak (tagliata), ribeyes, entrecôte, burgers, sandwiches, and traditional dishes like fusilli with Marchigiana ragù, all made with high-quality ingredients. The outdoor dining area features communal tables that fill up quickly in the early evening; booking by phone is highly recommended, as attendance in previous years has far exceeded expectations.
The Marchigiana IGP Festival is about more than just great food. Each evening is brought to life by live music and an entertainment program that has previously featured street performers, jugglers, fire-eaters, and curious snake shows. This traveling performance moves through the festival area, making it a great outing for families with children. The atmosphere is that of a genuine Irpinian village festival, where the personal connection with the chefs and producers is just as valuable as the meal itself.
Capriglia Irpina is located just a few kilometers from Avellino, on the slopes overlooking the Partenio massif. The village preserves the 16th-century mother church of San Nicola di Bari, built on much older foundations, and a charming urban layout that comes alive in the summer with popular festivities. The festival is part of a rich summer calendar in Irpinia, filled with events dedicated to local products, from Greco di Tufo wine to highland cheeses. Here, however, the focus is firmly on the meat, in a territory with a long history of Apennine livestock farming.
For the third consecutive year, Macelleria Ruta brought its festival dedicated to Marchigiana IGP beef to Capriglia Irpina, with three consecutive evenings of festivities from Friday to Sunday. The formula remained the tried-and-tested one: meat selected and processed in the shop as the absolute protagonist, accompanied by music and entertainment distributed throughout the event area.
The appeal went well beyond the borders of Irpinia: local press reported on food lovers arriving from across the region, drawn by the mix of culinary quality and village atmosphere that characterized the 2026 edition. Once again, the event confirmed itself as one of the most popular summer appointments in the municipality, capable of transforming a small town in the province of Avellino into a food and wine destination for a weekend.
The menu featured the specialties that have made the festival recognizable: grilled cuts, burgers, sandwiches, and traditional dishes prepared exclusively with Marchigiana IGP beef. The organizers did not release a detailed hourly schedule for the evenings: access was free, with food available for purchase at the stands and the possibility of booking a table.
The third edition was spread over three consecutive evenings, from Friday, July 10 to Sunday, July 12, 2026, in the spaces set up at Macelleria Ruta in Capriglia Irpina.
The organizers did not publish a detailed hourly program or the names of the artists involved: communication focused on the gastronomic offering and the convivial atmosphere of the three days.
Capriglia Irpina is about 8 km from Avellino. By car, take the Avellino-Salerno highway junction or the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Avellino Ovest exit), then follow the provincial roads leading up to the village. The journey from Naples takes about an hour. By train, the reference station is Avellino, which is connected to the village by local bus services.
The event is set up in the outdoor spaces of Macelleria Ruta, in the center of Capriglia Irpina (AV). Parking should be sought in the surrounding streets; on busier nights, it is advisable to park a few hundred meters away and walk.
There is no entrance fee: you pay for what you consume at the food stands. To book a table, you can contact the organizers at the numbers provided during the festival (380 9043323 and 340 3506762).
The event is traditionally held on the second weekend of July and spans three evenings, from Friday to Sunday.
