The parade of allegorical floats and masks in the heart of Marano sul Panaro
When Carnival season arrives, Marano sul Panaro — a village in the Modenese Apennines nestled along the Panaro river valley, in Emilia-Romagna — transforms into a large open-air stage. The Maranese Carnival is one of those village festivals that are part of the Emilian calendar: a genuine event, built with the work of volunteers and local groups, where popular tradition meets the desire to be together.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats and masks which, in the early afternoon, winds through the streets of the town center. The floats, handmade with papier-mâché and a lot of imagination, advance slowly between two rows of spectators, accompanied by costumed figures and a cheerful soundtrack. Along the route, there are also choreographic and musical performances: among the usual participants are the dancers of the Gruppo Folkloristico Maranese, the Fruste Infuocate dance group, and the musical entertainment of the group I Rimediati.
The Maranese Carnival is designed for a broad and diverse audience, but it is especially the little ones who experience it with enthusiasm, amidst confetti, streamers, and masks. The presence of food stalls and the traditional Vin Brulè Hut allows visitors to warm up and taste local flavors in the heart of the Apennine winter.
The festival doesn't end with the parade. In the evening, the event moves to the Circolo La Grama, where a dinner open to all (by reservation) is held, followed by a dancing session with musical entertainment. This is how the people of Marano extend the festive day, in a convivial atmosphere that has always been the soul of the festivals and carnivals in this corner of the Province of Modena.
The Maranese Carnival 2026 offered on Tuesday, February 17, a day entirely dedicated to Carnival traditions, designed for a broad and diverse audience.
In the afternoon, starting at 2:30 PM, the town's streets became the backdrop for the parade of allegorical floats and masks, enriched by choreographic and musical performances. The evening then moved to Circolo La Grama with a dinner open to all and a dancing session.
Marano sul Panaro can be reached by car via the Vignolese road (SP4623) or the Pedemontana connecting Vignola and Sassuolo; the village is about 30 km from Modena. The nearest useful train station is Vignola (Modena-Vignola line), from which you can continue by bus or car.
The parade takes place in the afternoon starting at 2:30 PM along the town's streets. The evening dinner and dancing starts at 8:30 PM at Circolo La Grama.
Admission to the parade is free. The evening dinner at Circolo La Grama is by reservation.
