The challenge of the six districts, racing barrels through the historic streets of the Maremma
The Barrel Palio is the most cherished festival in Manciano, a village in the Maremma region of the province of Grosseto, in the heart of Tuscany. Every year, on the last weekend of August, the six town districts compete for the Palio in a spectacular race: manually pushing heavy 100 kg wooden barrels along a circuit that winds through Piazza Garibaldi, via Curtatone, via San Martino, Piazza della Chiesa, via Madoni, and via Cavour.
The six historic districts of the village compete for victory: Borgo, Cassero, Fonti, Imposto, Mulinello, and Monumento. Throughout the event, the streets of Manciano are decorated with the flags and colors of the districts, while residents parade with their banners during the opening procession. Each team fields up to ten pushers: the barrel must always be pushed by two athletes at a time, alternating throughout the heats, semi-finals, and the final.
The event was established on September 12, 2010, by the Manciano Pro Loco as part of the Festa delle Cantine. Wishing to avoid involving animals, as is common in many Tuscan palios, they chose to race with barrels. Since 2013, the organization has been managed by the Comitato Bottai Mancianesi, and the race has been permanently moved to the end of August. Over the years, the children's race, the women's race (the Trofeo Rosa, since 2016), and, since 2018, the thrilling men's night heats have been added.
Alongside the race is the painted barrel competition, established in 2013: each district commissions a local artist to decorate a barrel, which is then judged by a jury and awarded a prize named after the Manciano painter Gemma Detti. Since 2017, the works have followed an annual theme linked to the elements and seasons; the 2026 theme is Winter. The painted barrels remain on display throughout the village streets, turning Manciano into a small open-air gallery.
The Palio is not just about competition: during the evenings, the BarBottai and RistoBottai offer traditional Maremma cuisine, while photo exhibitions recount the history of the event. The final Sunday is dedicated to the children's mini-palio, the awards ceremony, the "Piero Rossi" Fairplay award, the "La Botte della Fortuna" lottery draw, and the final party with live music and DJ sets. It is an event that combines popular sport, tradition, and community identity, drawing visitors to Manciano from all over the Maremma.
The 2026 edition of the Manciano Barrel Palio is scheduled from August 27 to 30, 2026, in the historic center of the village, in the province of Grosseto. The six districts—Borgo, Cassero, Fonti, Imposto, Mulinello, and Monumento—will compete for the Palio in the traditional barrel race, accompanied by the women's race, the children's mini-palio, and the painted barrel competition, which this year focuses on the theme of Winter. The complete hourly program, including parades, evening heats, and awards ceremonies, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Manciano can be reached by car via the SS74 Maremmana, in the hinterland of the province of Grosseto. The nearest train stations are Albinia and Orbetello-Monte Argentario, which are connected by local buses. The reference airport is Rome Fiumicino, about a two-hour drive away.
The races and events are held in the historic center of Manciano, with the circuit around Piazza Garibaldi and the evenings in the village squares.
Participation in the races and parades is free. Typical refreshment points (BarBottai and RistoBottai) are open every evening during the event.
We recommend arriving early for the evening heats and booking your accommodation in the Maremma agritourisms well in advance, as they are in high demand in August.
