The rowing regatta between the four districts of Porto Santo Stefano, held every August 15th
The Palio Marinaro dell'Argentario is the most anticipated event of the summer in Porto Santo Stefano, the main town of the Monte Argentario municipality in the province of Grosseto, nestled in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma. Every year on August 15th (Ferragosto), the town comes to a standstill to witness the historic rowing regatta. The local waters are transformed for the occasion into a grand natural amphitheater, affectionately dubbed by locals as the "Turquoise Stadium".
The Palio is a challenge between the four historic districts of Porto Santo Stefano, each with its own colors and symbols:
The crews race aboard four identical guzzi, traditional rowing boats named after Mediterranean winds: Maestrale, Grecale, Libeccio, and Scirocco. Each crew consists of one coxswain and four rowers, who must cover a total of 4,000 meters, completing ten 400-meter laps between two buoys, with five turns at sea and four on land. It is a true test of strength, technique, and endurance that requires months of training.
Rowing competitions in the Argentario have deep roots: tradition links the origin of the Palio to the escape of a fishing boat pursued by pirates in the Tyrrhenian Sea, while the first documented races date back to the 18th century. Originally tied to the feast of the patron saint, the regattas were officially regulated by the Municipality of Monte Argentario in 1937, which is considered the first modern edition of the Palio. Since then, the event has grown into a defining identity for the entire Argentario community.
The Palio Marinaro is more than just the race on August 15th. The week leading up to the event is marked by district dinners, a historic costume parade, and, on the evening of August 14th, a poignant procession in honor of Santa Maria Assunta through the town streets, in which the Palio crews also participate. It is a crescendo of emotion and local rivalry that involves every family in Porto Santo Stefano, forging a deep bond between the seafaring people and their traditions.
The 83rd Palio Marinaro dell'Argentario will be held on August 15, 2026, in the waters off the Piazzale dei Rioni in Porto Santo Stefano. As per tradition, the eve (August 14) is dedicated to the procession of Santa Maria Assunta through the town's streets, with the participation of the four district crews. The day of the Palio opens with the district parade and culminates in the rowing regatta between Croce, Fortezza, Pilarella, and Valle.
The race takes place in the stretch of sea in front of the Piazzale dei Rioni, the "Turquoise Stadium". For final times and any updates, please refer to the official website of the Ente Palio Marinaro dell'Argentario.
The district costume parade and the start of the rowing regatta in the "Turquoise Stadium" in front of the Piazzale dei Rioni are the highlights of the edition. Also not to be missed is the Assunta procession on the eve, August 14.
Porto Santo Stefano is located on the Monte Argentario promontory in the province of Grosseto. By car: take the Monte Argentario exit from the Aurelia (SS1) road towards Porto Santo Stefano. By train: the nearest station is Orbetello-Monte Argentario, which is connected to Porto Santo Stefano by local bus services.
The regatta traditionally takes place on August 15th (Ferragosto), with the district parade in the afternoon and the race starting in the evening.
The event is very popular: we recommend arriving well in advance to secure a spot along the Piazzale dei Rioni and the waterfront. As it is Ferragosto during the peak summer season, it is advisable to book your accommodation in the Argentario well in advance.
