The street food festival in Mazzarino, in the heart of Sicily
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Makarina Street Food is the food and wine festival dedicated to street food that brings Mazzarino to life—a hilltop town nestled at over 550 meters above sea level in the heart of the Caltanissetta province, in Sicily. Born as a convivial late-summer gathering, the event has become a highly anticipated date that draws visitors from the Salso Valley and the entire Caltanissetta area, transforming the town center into a grand village of taste for a few evenings.
The core of the event is street food: a stroll between stalls and food trucks where you can sample specialties prepared and served on the spot. Alongside traditional Sicilian and local dishes, you will find flavors from all over Italy, in a journey that invites you to curate your own dinner, one paper cone at a time. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is the informal, family-friendly one of a village festival, where you sit at outdoor tables to share a meal with friends and strangers alike.
Beyond the culinary offerings, the evenings are accompanied by live music and entertainment that keep the streets lively until late. The mild mid-September climate makes the festival the perfect occasion to experience the town in a festive mood, amidst lights, aromas, and the chatter of people filling the city center streets.
The setting is Mazzarino, one of the most interesting historic centers in inland Sicily, dominated by the characteristic castle known as u Cannuni with its cylindrical tower of Roman-Byzantine origin. The village, which flourished between the 17th and 18th centuries, preserves valuable churches and palaces and is tied to deep religious traditions, most notably the feast of the Madonna del Mazzaro, the town's patron saint, also celebrated in September. Visiting Mazzarino during Makarina Street Food means combining the discovery of local historical heritage with the pleasure of fine dining.
The dates for the 2026 edition of Makarina Street Food in Mazzarino have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place in September, featuring street food stalls, food trucks, live music, and evening entertainment in the town center. Program details will be communicated by the organizers on their official social media channels.
Mazzarino is located in central Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached via the SS117bis and the provincial roads connecting the Caltanissetta area; the most convenient train station is in Caltanissetta, from where you can continue by car or bus. The reference airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
Admission to the event is generally free. The evenings take place from late afternoon until late at night. It is recommended to check dates and details on the organizers' social media pages before traveling.
Mid-September evenings in the hills can be cool: bring a light jacket. It is advisable to arrive early to find parking near the center.
