The Maypole Festival in the Passiria Valley

The Maibaumfest is one of the most cherished traditional festivals in San Leonardo in Passiria (St. Leonhard in Passeier), a municipality in the Passiria Valley in the Province of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. At the center of the festivities is the Maibaum, or Maypole: a towering, decorated, and debarked tree trunk raised in the town square, following a ritual deeply rooted in the German-speaking peasant culture of South Tyrol.

A Community Ritual

The festival is born from the collaboration of four historic local associations: the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Freiwillige Feuerwehr), the hunting reserve (Jagdrevier), the brass band (Musikkapelle), and the Schützen company (Schützenkompanie) "Andreas Hofer", named after the Passiria hero who symbolizes Tyrolean resistance. Their joint effort transforms the event into a true community celebration, drawing hundreds of visitors from across the valley.

Raising the Maibaum

The highlight of the day is the raising of the pole at Raiffeisenplatz. It is a spectacular operation: the trunk, standing between 23 and 25 meters tall and weighing over a ton, is transported in a procession on a decorated wagon and then hoisted vertically. The day begins with a folk parade through the town, accompanied by the brass band, decorated floats, and the characteristic Goaslschnöller (whip crackers), iconic figures of Alpine folklore.

Program and Atmosphere

A full day of festivities unfolds around the raising of the pole. The solemn tapping of the first beer takes place on the town bridge, followed by the Dämmerschoppen, an aperitif at sunset. There is no shortage of live music featuring groups playing traditional Bavarian and South Tyrolean repertoire, a tug-of-war competition, entertainment for children (bouncy castle, children's cinema), and a raffle with highly coveted prizes. South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties round out the experience.

A Well-Established Tradition

Founded in 2022, the Maibaumfest has quickly established itself as one of the most anticipated spring events in San Leonardo in Passiria, serving as a living testament to Tyrolean traditions and the community spirit that defines the villages of the Passiria Valley.
