The ritual of water, fire, and herbs in Montorio al Vomano
The Magic Night of Saint John is a popular festival held in Montorio al Vomano, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of Abruzzo. Created to rediscover and celebrate the ancient rituals of the summer solstice, the event weaves together the four elements of European peasant tradition linked to the night of June 23rd: water, fire, wild herbs, and rituals of friendship and brotherhood. It is an event that restores to the local community the memory of ancient gestures, passed down for generations and now revived with the participation of associations, schools, and citizens.
The first day begins at the Fonte Vecchia with a guided botanical walk, during which traditional wild herbs are gathered. This is followed by the collective preparation of the Acqua di San Giovanni, made by infusing flowers and herbs collected at sunset and then exposed to the night dew: according to popular belief, those who wash with this water on the morning of June 24th will receive health and good luck for the entire year. Alongside the water, the Ramajetti—traditional propitiatory bouquets—are prepared, with demonstrations of crafts by local artisans and readings dedicated to the significance of the occasion.
As evening falls, the festival ignites: the Dance of Fire, performed by students of the Le Scarpette Rosa school, and the evocative Path of Lights transform the town into a setting suspended between reality and magic. The evening concludes with a concert that combines music and social commitment, with tastings of local products to strengthen the bond between ritual and conviviality.
The second day is dedicated to the walk along the ancient paths of the Colle up to the hamlet of San Giovanni, with a refreshment stop at the Belvedere. Here, Holy Mass is celebrated with the blessing of the Ramajetti, and the ancient ritual of the Cummare and Cumpare a Fiore is renewed—a symbolic pact of friendship and godparenthood typical of Abruzzese folk culture. The day ends with a convivial gathering featuring traditional songs and music.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Montorio al Vomano APS with the patronage of the Municipality and the support of the BIM and local entities, the Magic Night of Saint John is much more than a re-enactment: it is a moment where the town reconnects with its roots, involving schools, associations, and volunteers. The event confirms the vocation of inland Abruzzo to preserve and pass on its intangible traditions.
