Hiking, prayer, and nature at the Camaldolese hermitage beneath Corno Grande
The San Nicola di Corno Mountain Festival is a summer event held in the territory of the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of Abruzzo. The event draws hikers, pilgrims, and nature lovers to the ancient hermitage of San Nicola di Corno, perched at an altitude of about 1,096 meters on the eastern slopes of Corno Grande, within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The hermitage has its roots in the reformist eremitic movement that, between the 10th and 11th centuries, led Camaldolese monks to settle in these mountains. Documented as early as 1187 as Sancti Nicolay de Cornu and long linked to the monastery of Santa Croce di Fonte Avellana, the small Romanesque temple stands in a clearing called Prato dei Fiori, leaning against the rock face. The church, approximately fourteen meters long and built with squared stone blocks, still preserves traces of frescoes and, on the high altar, a depiction of Saint Nicholas in Castelli ceramics. The ruins of the ancient monastic buildings remain nearby.
The charm of the festival lies in how the site is reached: on foot, along the historic mule track that climbs from Casale San Nicola, a mountain hamlet of Isola del Gran Sasso. The path, immersed in woods and high-altitude meadows, prepares participants for an encounter with a place of silence and meditation. According to tradition, Saint Nicholas is celebrated on the Sunday following Pentecost, when numerous devotees climb to the hermitage to attend Holy Mass.
The event is part of the Valle delle Abbazie circuit, which promotes the spiritual and naturalistic itineraries of the Teramo area. Appropriate mountain clothing and trekking footwear are recommended.
The 2026 Mountain Festival marks the eleventh edition of this event dedicated to those who love the mountains and the peace of meditative places. The appointment is set for Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Hermitage of San Nicola di Corno, in the territory of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia. Participation is free and appropriate clothing for the mountain environment is recommended. The detailed program, including times, Holy Mass, and any social moments, will be released in the days leading up to the event through the Valle delle Abbazie channels.
Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia can be reached by car from Teramo (about 30 km) or from the A24 motorway exit. From there, continue toward the hamlet of Casale San Nicola, the starting point of the mule track that climbs to the hermitage. The final stretch must be covered exclusively on foot.
Wear trekking shoes and appropriate mountain clothing; bring water and sun protection. Admission is free.
