A magical and fantasy-themed market in the heart of L'Aquila
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Magic Fair is the most anticipated fantasy event of the winter in L'Aquila. Every December, the 16th-century Castle Park and the historic center of L'Aquila, the capital of Abruzzo, transform into a world suspended between fairy tales and tradition, brought to life by magical Christmas markets, immersive activities, and shows. The event is promoted by the L'Aquila Young and L'Aquila che Rinasce ETS associations, with the support of the Municipality of L'Aquila and in collaboration with Startup L'Aquila and Light's On.
The heart of the fair is the School of Magic, offering lessons, games, and challenges for children and teenagers, organized in morning and afternoon sessions. This narrative experience is surrounded by a rich program of attractions that, over the years, has turned the event into a pop-up theme park nestled in the greenery of the Castle Park.
Along the park's pathways, the Christmas market stalls offer handmade wands, decorative potions, collectible souvenirs, and creations by fantasy artisans. Access to the markets is free, while individual attractions require a fee or booking. There is also a variety of street food options, adding to the festive, family-friendly atmosphere.
Among the most evocative highlights, the Ridotto of the Municipal Theater hosts a multimedia exhibition dedicated to the mythology of J.R.R. Tolkien, featuring miniatures, models, and explanatory panels, as well as the dance performance "The Power of the Rings", with choreography by the Art Nouveau Dance Center, inspired by the universe of Middle-earth.
Born as a youth-led initiative, the Magic Fair is now one of the events that best captures the cultural rebirth of the Abruzzo capital: a way to bring families, children, and enthusiasts back into the public spaces of the historic center, combining entertainment, craftsmanship, and creativity. It is an ideal opportunity to discover L'Aquila during the Christmas season, amidst the magical atmosphere of the Castle Park and the vibrancy of its local associations.
The 2026 edition of the Magic Fair in L'Aquila is awaiting official confirmation: at the moment, the organizers (L'Aquila Young and L'Aquila che Rinasce ETS) have not yet published the dates and program. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place in December at the 16th-century Castle Park, with the usual format of a magic and fantasy-themed Christmas market. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available on official social media channels.
The 16th-century Castle Park is located right next to the historic center of L'Aquila. By car: A24 Rome-L'Aquila-Teramo motorway, exit at L'Aquila Ovest or Est. By train: L'Aquila station, then walk or take a bus to the center. There are numerous parking lots near the park.
Admission to the fair and markets is free; individual attractions (School of Magic, escape rooms, virtual reality, workshops) require a fee and are generally by reservation. The "Power of the Rings" show at the Municipal Theater is free until capacity is reached.
This event is designed for families and children: warm clothing is recommended, as it is a December event held largely outdoors. We suggest checking the updated dates and program on the official Magic Fair social media channels.
