The ancient Carnic village of Sutrio becomes a large open-air wood workshop
There is a village, at the top of the Bรปt Valley, where wood is not just a material but a way of being in the world. Sutrio, an ancient village in Carnia, in the province of Udine, has made wood craftsmanship its identity for generations, and every year, on the first Sunday of September, it shares it with the world through Magia del Legno: a day when the village streets fill with wood shavings, the scent of resin, and the rhythmic sound of chisels.
The event, organised by Pro Loco Sutrio, was born in 1990 with the aim of preserving and passing down an ancient art and strengthening the community's bond with its territory. Since then, it has become a much-anticipated event for artisans and enthusiasts from all over Friuli Venezia Giulia, capable of transforming a small mountain village into a widespread art gallery.
For an entire day, from the early morning hours, sculptors and woodcarvers set up along the streets and in the courtyards of the village, working live: sculpture, inlay, restoration, turning, and every imaginable form of wood processing. The chainsaw carving performances are spectacular, while the little ones can enjoy dedicated workshops and the construction of wooden toys.
A must-see for anyone visiting Sutrio is the famous Presepio di Teno (Teno's Nativity Scene), an extraordinary wooden reproduction of the village created with meticulous detail: a work that alone is worth the trip and tells the story of this village's relationship with its material better than a thousand words.
Magia del Legno is also the perfect opportunity to discover Sutrio and its surroundings: the municipality is part of the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Italy' club and is located at the foot of Zoncolan, amidst mule tracks, stone houses, and historic shops. A late summer trip into the authentic heart of the Friulian mountains.
On the first Sunday of September, Sutrio renews its appointment with wood. From the early morning hours, the village streets come alive with open-air artisan workshops, chainsaw carving exhibitions, children's workshops, and stalls with typical Carnic dishes. Often, the event is preceded by one or two preview days with evening events, such as concerts in the village oratories.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Sutrio in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on recent editions, Sunday unfolds as follows:
How to get there: Sutrio can be reached by car along the SS52bis through the Val Bรปt; exit the motorway at Carnia (A23), then about 30 km north.
