The Easter ritual of the kiss between Mary and the Risen Christ in Modica
The Madonna Vasa Vasa is a ritual that has united the people of Modica for generations, making Easter in Modica—in the Province of Ragusa, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily—one of the island's most beloved traditions. The name in the Sicilian dialect literally means "kiss kiss," referring to the symbolic embrace between the Madonna and the Risen Christ, which is renewed every Easter Sunday along the scenic Corso Umberto I, located in the UNESCO World Heritage historic center.
Two processions depart from the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria di Betlem: one accompanies the statue of the Risen Christ, the other the Madonna, still covered by her black mourning veil. The statues travel separately through the city until they converge at noon in Piazza Monumento, in front of the Town Hall. When the Madonna catches sight of her risen Son, she opens and closes her arms in a gesture of joy and disbelief, shedding her dark mantle to reveal her splendid sky-blue dress, while at that very moment, dozens of white doves take flight to seal the celebration. It is the climactic moment, awaited by thousands of faithful and visitors.
Every moment of the day is marked by the Banda Belluardo-Risadelli, which performs the traditional Madonna Vasa Vasa hymn. The ritual is deeply rooted in Modica's popular devotion, blending Christian faith, sacred theater, and folklore in an atmosphere of great emotional intensity that is part of Sicily's famous "Holy Week Rites."
The Madonna Vasa Vasa is much more than a procession: it is the heart of Modica's identity, an event that draws emigrants and tourists alike, capturing the deepest meaning of Easter in just a few minutes through the flight of the doves and the embrace of the statues.
The 2026 Madonna Vasa Vasa brought the Holy Week of Modica to life with its customary program of rites and processions. On Holy Thursday (April 2), the "In Coena Domini" Mass was held at the parish of Santa Maria di Betlem, followed by an adoration vigil; on Good Friday (April 3), the Adoration of the Cross and the evening procession took place; on Holy Saturday (April 4), the Easter Vigil with the Resurrection rite was celebrated. On Easter Sunday (April 5), the program culminated with the departure of the statues at 11:00 AM and, at noon, the famous kiss in Piazza Monumento; in the evening, the Holy Mass presided over by the Bishop of Noto and the final procession toward the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie took place.
Holy Week, with the highlight on Easter Sunday: the meeting and the kiss of the statues take place at noon in Piazza Monumento, along Corso Umberto I.
