About San Biagio Comiso

Every second Sunday of July, Comiso celebrates its patron saint, San Biagio, with one of the most heartfelt religious festivals in the Ragusa province. The external celebration culminates in a solemn procession of the 17th-century statue through the historic center, accompanied by devotees performing 'u viaggiu barefoot and carrying 'ntocci, votive torches adorned with lit candles. Among the most characteristic traditions are the wheat harvest with Sicilian carts and the auction of blessed bread and grapes, evocative testimonies of the Iblean rural culture.

The patronal festival of Comiso

The San Biagio Festival is the major religious and popular event through which the town of Comiso, in the Ragusa province of Sicily, honors its patron saint. Although liturgically observed on February 3rd, the day of his martyrdom, the most solemn external feast takes place on the second Sunday of July, when the entire city gathers around the saint's statue in a manifestation of faith that has deep historical roots.

History and devotion

San Biagio, Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and a martyr around 316 AD, has been venerated in Comiso as its patron saint since time immemorial. Tradition attributes to him the protection of the city from the plague and salvation from the disastrous 1693 earthquake that devastated the Val di Noto. The saint is invoked primarily as the protector of the throat: according to legend, he miraculously healed a child choking on a fish bone, which led to the ritual of blessing the throat with crossed candles. The Church of San Biagio, rebuilt after the earthquake and embellished with a 17th-century statue and frescoes by Gaetano Di Stefano, guards the religious identity of the town.

The procession and rituals

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the fercolo (processional float) which, on Sunday afternoon, travels through the streets of the historic center, carrying the saint's statue amidst crowds of people. Devotees perform 'u viaggiu, the votive pilgrimage used to fulfill personal vows: some walk barefoot, others carry the float on their shoulders, and some hold the 'ntocci, the characteristic votive torches decorated with lit candles. It is a moment of intense emotional participation, where the Comiso community renews its bond with the patron saint every year.

Rural traditions

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves rituals that recall the ancient rural civilization of the Iblei mountains. Among the most evocative are the wheat harvest with richly decorated Sicilian carts and the auction of blessed bread and grapes, held on the eve of the feast. These gestures, passed down from generation to generation, reflect a festival that is both an act of faith and a celebration of the harvest and the land.

An identity-defining event

The San Biagio Festival represents an identity-defining event of great appeal for Comiso and the entire Ragusa province, capable of uniting religious solemnity with the warmth of Sicilian popular tradition. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover the city's Baroque historic center, experience the authentic atmosphere of an island patronal feast, and breathe in the deep spirituality that animates this corner of South-East Sicily.
