In the heart of summer, the municipality of Grumo Appula, in the province of Bari, renews one of the oldest and most cherished devotions in Puglia: the Madonna di Mellitto Festival, traditionally celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July. At the center of the cult is the venerated image of Mary Most Holy, kept in the rural sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, which stands in the Mellitto district, about nine kilometers from the town.
The origins of the Madonna delle Grazie sanctuary in Mellitto are uncertain; as it is not mentioned in 16th-century documentary sources, its construction remains shrouded in mystery. The church, a single-nave building with a barrel vault and a gabled facade topped by a small bell tower, houses a painting of the Virgin and Child dated 1697, in which Mary holds a small bird in her left hand. The place of worship is linked to the Santa Maria di Monteverde Parish of Grumo Appula.
The celebrations open with an evocative pilgrimage: the faithful walk to the Mellitto district to collect the statue of the Madonna and accompany it to the town. A journey of about nine kilometers, traveled with faith and reflection, which represents the first act of a festival deeply rooted in the identity of the Grumo community.
The most spectacular element is the Parade of Flower-Decorated Floats. The floats are adorned with thousands of tissue paper flowers, handmade in the preceding months by entire families: a patient, collective effort involving hundreds of people. Each float depicts sacred scenes and figures and parades along the main streets of the town, in a riot of colors that transforms Grumo Appula into a grand stage for folk art.
On Saturday evening, after the solemn mass, the statue of the Madonna crosses the town in a procession to the Monteverde church, accompanied by the flower-decorated floats. On Sunday morning, after the farewell mass, the simulacrum is carried back toward Mellitto: by tradition, it is the unmarried women who carry it on their shoulders, in the belief that the gesture will favor marriage within the year. Embroidered blankets hang from balconies while petals and leaves are thrown as the statue passes. Upon returning to the sanctuary, blessed "panelle" (small loaves) are distributed.
Included in the heritage of folk festivals of the Puglia Region, the Madonna di Mellitto Festival combines faith, folklore, and craftsmanship in an event that every summer draws devotees and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Terra di Bari to Grumo Appula.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna di Mellitto Festival opens with the night pilgrimage from Grumo Appula to the Mellitto district, set for Friday, July 3, 2026, at 7:00 PM. The full calendar of rites, the Parade of Flower-Decorated Floats, and the processions will be announced by the Santa Maria di Monteverde Parish and the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
Grumo Appula is located in the Bari hinterland, about 25 km from Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS96 and the provincial roads of the Terra di Bari. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane on the BariโAltamuraโMatera line, with a stop at the Grumo Appula station. The Mellitto sanctuary stands in the open countryside, about 9 km from the town center.
Participation in processions and celebrations is free. Comfortable clothing is recommended for following the pilgrimage and the procession, and it is advised to check the updated schedules at the Santa Maria di Monteverde Parish.
