The patronal feast of Vallelunga Pratameno in honor of the Black Madonna of Loreto

The Madonna di Loreto Festival is the most cherished event of the year in Vallelunga Pratameno, a small town in the province of Caltanissetta nestled in the Sicilian hinterland, halfway between Palermo and the provincial capital. Dedicated to the Black Madonna of Loreto, the town's patron saint, the celebration traditionally takes place during the last week of September, around the fourth Sunday of the month, and inextricably links the sacred and the secular.
Vallelunga has its roots in the ancient Vallislonge Prato Ameno, a fiefdom founded in the 15th century by Don Pietro Marino di Termini. It was the noble Papรจ family, Princes of Valdina, who introduced the cult of the Madonna of Loreto in 1671, known as the "Bedda Matri di Luritu": a bond born from their origins linked to Montserrat, Spain, where the "Moreneta" (Black Madonna) had been venerated for centuries. In Vallelunga, the feast does not fall on December 10, the traditional date of the Sanctuary of Loreto, but in September, the month when farmers returned from the fields after the summer harvest and almond beating.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the Virgin's statue, a massive wooden sculpture weighing about 400 kilos, adorned with gold jewelry donated by the faithful as ex-voto offerings. The main Sunday features a procession of civil and military authorities, a solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church, and, in the evening, the procession accompanied by firecrackers, drums, and fireworks.
The heart of the secular festivities is the Local Products Festival, a showcase of the flavors of the Caltanissetta territory. Among the specialties linked to the feast, the cubaita stands outโa crunchy almond nougat that women once prepared with hand-beaten almonds. There is no shortage of dialect comedies performed by the Teatro Stabile Nisseno, performances by the local town band, and, in recent editions, tribute band concerts and spectacular laser shows in the square.
For the people of Vallelunga, many of whom emigrated in the 20th century as far as Buffalo and Batavia in New York State, the festival represents a strong call to their roots and sense of belonging. Experiencing the Madonna di Loreto Festival means discovering an authentic corner of inland Sicily, where the Sicilian Region still preserves rites, flavors, and devotions passed down through generations.
The official program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna di Loreto Festival in Vallelunga Pratameno has not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the events that have always marked the festival are expected: dialect comedy, the Local Products Festival, solemn Holy Mass, and the solemn procession of the wooden statue of the Madonna, accompanied by a brass band, firecrackers, and fireworks.
