The festival of the Madonna di Fatima district in Squinzano, blending faith, processions, and Salento pizzica music
The Madonna di Fatima Festival is the most cherished event in the district of the same name in Squinzano, a town in northern Salento, in the province of Lecce, Puglia. Every year, in the first half of May, the neighborhood gathers around the Madonna di Fatima Parish to honor the Virgin Mary who appeared to the three Portuguese shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—in Fatima in 1917. It is a grassroots festival, brought to life by parishioners and a local committee, weaving together spiritual devotion with the convivial, popular atmosphere typical of Puglian town feasts.
The devotional heart of the festival is the novena, nine days of preparation beginning in early May with the recitation of the rosary followed by evening mass. On the main days, celebrations are led by prominent figures of the Salento Church; in recent years, the altar has hosted archbishops Giovanni Intini (Brindisi-Ostuni) and Angelo Raffaele Panzetta (Lecce), highlighting the deep bond between this community and the diocese.
The highlight is the procession on the eve of May 13th—the anniversary of the 1917 apparition—when the statue of the Madonna di Fatima is carried through the streets of the district, accompanied by the faithful, hymns, and a brass band. It is a simple, moving act of faith that renews the identity of the neighborhood every year.
Alongside the liturgy, the evenings come alive with a civil program featuring comedy shows, entertainment, musical contests, and family-friendly activities. There is no shortage of local craft stalls, food areas serving regional flavors, and play zones for children with inflatables and games. The grand finale is dedicated to Salento folk music: pizzica groups and traditional melodies keep the neighborhood dancing late into the night, in true Puglian style.
Squinzano is a town with music deeply rooted in its heritage: it is the birthplace of one of the most famous brass bands in Southern Italy, so much so that "the Squinzano" has become a common term for great touring bands. This musical vocation is palpable during the Madonna di Fatima Festival, where music accompanies both the sacred and festive moments. Visiting the district during these days means experiencing an authentic piece of Salento's popular culture firsthand.
The 2026 edition opened on May 4th with the start of the novena, marked each evening by the recitation of the rosary and the 7:00 PM holy mass. On May 7th, the celebration was led by Archbishop Giovanni Intini of Brindisi-Ostuni. The climax arrived on May 13th, the eve of the anniversary: at 7:00 PM, mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Lecce, Angelo Raffaele Panzetta, followed by the solemn procession with the statue of the Madonna di Fatima through the neighborhood streets. The evening continued with the "Lillo Birillo show," local craft stalls, a food area, and a children's zone. The festivities concluded on Saturday, May 16th at 8:30 PM with a performance by the group Alla Bua, featuring folk melodies and Salento pizzica.
Squinzano is located along the SS613 Brindisi-Lecce highway. By car, it can be reached via the Surbo or Trepuzzi exits. The Squinzano train station is on the Adriatic line (Lecce-Brindisi-Bari), with frequent connections. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale (approx. 25 km) and Bari-Palese.
Religious and civil events take place in the Madonna di Fatima district, centered around the parish of the same name and the surrounding streets and squares.
The festival is free to attend, both for religious celebrations and civil entertainment.
