The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the patronal feast of Ciminna, a charming village in the Palermo hinterland of northern Sicily. Always considered the "festival par excellence" of the town, it gathers the entire community and numerous visitors every year around the devotion to the young martyr, the patron saint of the municipality. The cult of Saint Vitus in Ciminna has been documented since the 16th century, but the festival has its roots in a specific event: September 4, 1672, when the relics of Saints Vitus, Modestus, and Crescentia, companions in martyrdom, arrived in the town.
Ciminna honors its patron twice a year. The liturgical feast on June 15, preceded by the five Tuesdays dedicated to the martyrs, includes Holy Mass at the Sanctuary and a short procession of the statue. The main patronal feast takes place on the first Sunday of September and celebrates the arrival of the relics in town: it is on this occasion that the Ciminna community brings its most impressive displays to life.
The element that makes this festival unique is the historical pageant, held since 1972. It is not a simple religious parade, but a true theatrical re-enactment: about 200 participants in Roman-era costumes, divided into thirteen scenes, stage the life, martyrdom, and arrival of Saint Vitus's relics along the streets of the historic center. The relics, kept in a precious silver urn, are carried together with the statue of the Saint from the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi to the Mother Church; the following day, the procession makes the return journey and the statue is accompanied to the Sanctuary, located on the hill facing the town.
The festivities open with Solemn Mass in the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, attended by civil and religious authorities. During the September days, alongside moments of faith, there are shows, concerts, and events that enliven the village squares and streets, in a festive atmosphere that involves both adults and children. The conclusion is entrusted, as per tradition, to the unmissable fireworks that light up the sky of Ciminna.
The festival is also the ideal opportunity to discover Ciminna and its heritage: the historic center, the monumental Mother Church, and the Sanctuary of Saint Vitus overlooking the hills of the province of Palermo. Visiting the municipality during the festival days means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic religious and popular traditions of the Sicilian hinterland, where devotion, spectacle, and local identity merge into one great celebration.
The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr 2026 will return to enliven the historic center of Ciminna, in the province of Palermo, according to the usual schedule of the first Sunday of September. The official dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: please refer to the updates from the Saint Vitus the Martyr Committee. Confirmed in the spirit of tradition are the historical pageant with about 200 participants in Roman costume across thirteen scenes, religious celebrations in the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi and the Mother Church, concerts, shows, and the final fireworks.
Ciminna is located in the Palermo hinterland, about an hour from Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Villabate or Bagheria exit) continuing inland; the village is connected to the SS121. The historic center is pedestrianized during processions: it is recommended to park in areas outside the ancient core.
Liturgical feast on June 15; main patronal feast on the first Sunday of September. The main rites (Solemn Mass and historical pageant) take place on Sunday and the following Monday.
Admission to the celebrations and processions is free. It is recommended to arrive early to witness the historical pageant and the final fireworks.
