The patronal feast of Parabita on the last Sunday of May, blending faith, the 'curraturi' race, and Salento tradition
The Madonna della Coltura Festival is the patronal feast of Parabita, a town in the Salento region, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Puglia. It is celebrated every year during the last week of May, culminating on the last Sunday of the month, when the entire community gathers around the statue of Maria Santissima della Coltura, affectionately known by locals as "Matonna ta Cutura".
The devotion stems from an ancient local legend: a farmer, while working in the fields, is said to have found a stone depicting the Madonna and Child. Although taken to a church, the monolith miraculously reappeared at the site of its discovery, a sign interpreted as divine will. The Basilica Santuario Maria SS. della Coltura was built around this cult and was elevated to a minor basilica in 1999. The term "coltura" (cultivation) reflects the deep bond between the community of Parabita, the land, and agricultural labor.
One of the most defining elements of the festival is the 'curraturi' race: around noon on Sunday, devotees compete in a race that symbolically reenacts the run of the farmer who discovered the miraculous stone. It is one of the most ancient and beloved popular rites, blending religious spirit, farming tradition, and collective participation.
The religious program includes a solemn procession with the statue of the Virgin through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by religious brotherhoods and a brass band. The town's main streets are lit up with traditional Salento illuminations, while Piazza Regina del Cielo and other public spaces host band concerts, performances, and cultural events. The festival concludes with the famous evening fireworks display, lighting up the sky over Parabita.
Between the sacred and the secular, the Madonna della Coltura Festival is an unmissable event for those wishing to experience the authentic tradition of Salento's patronal feasts. Alongside religious celebrations, there are market stalls, local products, and traditional sweets, making these days a meeting point for the Parabita community and the many visitors who flock to the town.
The 2026 Madonna della Coltura Festival was celebrated in Parabita during the last week of May, with the main event on the last Sunday of the month, May 31, 2026. These days of celebration renewed the ancient bond between the Parabita community and its patron saint.
The program followed established tradition: the solemn procession with the statue of Maria SS. della Coltura through the historic center, accompanied by brotherhoods and the brass band; the characteristic 'curraturi' race around noon; illuminations along the main streets; concerts and performances in the squares; and, in closing, the traditional fireworks display. The edition was promoted on the official Committee channels with the hashtag #cutura2026.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Parabita (LE) and at the Basilica Santuario Maria SS. della Coltura. The town is located in Salento, in the province of Lecce, a short distance from Gallipoli and the Ionian coast.
By car: from Lecce, take the SS274 / SP towards Gallipoli-Casarano, exit at Parabita. By train: the local station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; connections to lower Salento are available from Lecce.
Access to celebrations and events in the square is free. For the detailed program and updated times, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Madonna della Coltura Festival Committee and the Sanctuary.
