The patronal feast of Roccaforzata, blending faith, Arbëreshe tradition, and an ancient Byzantine sanctuary
The Madonna della Camera Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for Roccaforzata, a small town of about 1,750 inhabitants in the province of Taranto, Apulia. The celebration traditionally takes place in the days surrounding the first Thursday after Easter, when the entire community gathers around its protector in a multi-day tapestry of religious rites, music, lights, and conviviality.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Santuario della Madonna della Camera, located about 1.5 km from the town, along the road to Lizzano, in the area of the ancient village of Mennano. According to local tradition, it is a place of worship of Byzantine origin, linked to a legend of a Saracen invasion during which the inhabitants took refuge inside the sanctuary and were protected by a brilliant light emanating from the eyes of the Madonna's fresco. To this day, the sanctuary remains a pilgrimage destination and the arrival point for the most solemn procession of the festivities.
Roccaforzata traces its origins to the Middle Ages, when the territory was known as Rocca-vecchia. In the 15th century, King Ferrante I of Aragon welcomed Albanian (Arbëreshe) communities into the Kingdom of Naples, who settled in these sparsely populated lands: artistic and linguistic influences from that presence are still perceptible today. The town preserves its 15th-century Baronial Castle and the Church of the Santissima Trinità, a 16th-century building housing a painting dedicated to the Trinity, which serves as the mother church during the feast.
The religious program includes holy masses, the procession from the mother church to the sanctuary on the morning of the feast day, and the procession with the statue of the Madonna through the town center. The religious rites are accompanied by civil festivities: the morning tour of the brass band, the illuminations lighting up the main square and streets, evening concerts, and the final fireworks display that concludes the main day. Admission to all events is free.
The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover Tarantino gastronomy: lamb with peas, baked rabbit, pasta with sweet peppers, and ricotta cassatine accompany the festive days in the homes and streets of the village. A heritage of flavors that, together with devotion and tradition, makes the Madonna della Camera Feast an authentic slice of the identity of Roccaforzata and inland Apulia.
The 2026 Madonna della Camera Patronal Feast was held in Roccaforzata (Taranto) from Tuesday, April 7 to Friday, April 10, organized by the Santissima Trinità Parish led by Father Giuseppe Mandrillo. The main day was Thursday, April 9, featuring the dawn procession from the mother church to the sanctuary, the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Monsignor Filippo Santoro, Archbishop Emeritus of Taranto, and the procession with the statue of the Madonna. The festival combined religious rites, cultural meetings, the Città di Laterza brass band, evening concerts in the square, and the traditional fireworks display.
Roccaforzata is located in the hinterland of the province of Taranto, about 20 km from the provincial capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting Taranto to San Giorgio Ionico and Monteparano. The nearest train station is in Taranto, which is served by suburban buses to the towns in the area.
Religious celebrations are held at the Mother Church of the Santissima Trinità and at the Santuario della Madonna della Camera (about 1.5 km from the town). Concerts, illuminations, and the fireworks display enliven the main square and the streets of the center.
All events are free to attend.
