About Madonna degli Angeli

Every year in early August, the village of Sacco gathers to honor its oldest devotion: the Madonna degli Angeli Festival, established as a popular vow following the devastating 1656 plague. The event begins on July 31st with a historic fair, followed by three days of celebrations, solemn masses, and a procession starting from the Church of San Silvestro, the largest in the Vallo della Lucania diocese. A heartfelt celebration of faith, memory, and community in the heart of the Cilento hinterland.

A vow born from the 1656 plague

The Madonna degli Angeli Festival is the most cherished tradition in Sacco, a small village in the Province of Salerno, Campania, nestled in the heart of the Cilento region. Its roots date back to 1656, when the plague swept through Southern Italy, hitting this mountain community hard: local records show that only 57 out of 187 families survived. Once the epidemic ended, the people of Sacco attributed their survival to the protection of the Madonna degli Angeli and established a votive festival that has continued uninterrupted ever since.

The July 31st Fair

The traditional calendar kicks off on July 31st with a fair, one of the area's most historic events. For an entire day, the streets of the town center are filled with stalls offering typical Cilento products, cheeses, cured meats, and sweets, as well as handicrafts, textiles, and household goods. The fair preserves its ancient role as a vital hub for inland villages, serving as a time for residents to restock, meet neighbors from nearby valleys, and officially launch the festivities.

Three days of celebrations

From August 1st to 3rd, the village comes alive with the heart of the festival. The daily schedule alternates between liturgical moments and public gatherings, running from 10:00 AM until late in the evening, around 11:00 PM. Religious services are held in the parish church, while outside, the community gathers amidst lights, stalls, and musical performances.

  • July 31st: The fair along the village streets
  • Day One: Opening of the festivities and parish celebrations
  • Day Two: The solemn procession with the venerated image
  • Day Three: Closing ceremony with final services and communal gatherings

The procession and the legend of the statue

The highlight is the procession on the second day, which departs from the Church of San Silvestro and winds through the entire village. This parade is linked to one of Sacco's most famous oral traditions: it is said that the ancient statue of the Madonna degli Angeli once became so heavy that the faithful could no longer move it. Since then, a lighter, replacement statue has been used for the village tour, while the original remains safely in the church—a detail that speaks volumes about the bond between the village and its protector.

The Church of San Silvestro, the heart of devotion

The focal point of the festival is the Church of San Silvestro Papa, overlooking Piazza del Popolo. Built in 1756 on the site of a much older place of worship, it is considered the largest church in the Vallo della Lucania diocese, featuring three longitudinal naves intersected by a transept—a surprisingly grand layout for a town of only a few hundred inhabitants. Inside, it houses terracotta statues of San Silvestro, Christ at the Column, and Saint Nicholas.

Sacco, between the Sammaro Gorge and Monte Motola

Visitors arriving for the festival find much more than just a religious event. Sacco sits at the foot of Monte Motola, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, just a short distance from the spectacular Sammaro Gorge, one of the most striking canyons in Campania. Nearby, one can reach the springs of the Sammaro, the ancient mill, and the Grotta Grande, a site inhabited since the Bronze Age. The first days of August are the perfect time to combine the festival with an excursion into the Cilento hinterland.

A community gathering

Like many mountain village festivals, the Madonna degli Angeli is a time for homecoming: families from Sacco scattered across Italy and abroad—Sacco has strong historical ties to Brazil, particularly the city of Niterói—plan their return for these very days. Admission to all events promoted by the Municipality of Sacco and the parish is free of charge.

Practical information — Madonna degli Angeli

Getting there

Sacco is accessible only by road, via the provincial roads of the Cilento hinterland. The main motorway is the A2 Autostrada del Mediterraneo; the nearest train stations are on the Cilento Tyrrhenian line, from which you must continue by car or local bus services. The final stretch is mountainous: allow for longer travel times than the distance suggests.

Parking

During the festival, the historic center is almost entirely pedestrianized and very crowded: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot toward Piazza del Popolo.

Hours and costs

Festival days generally run from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Admission is free for all celebrations, the procession, and public events; the July 31st fair is also free to enter.

Tips

The village is located at a hilly-mountainous altitude: even in August, evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a sweater. There are few accommodation facilities in the village, so it is advisable to book well in advance or look for lodging in nearby towns within the National Park.
