The historic Madonie carnival in Castellana Sicula, featuring allegorical floats and masquerade groups
The Madonie Carnival is, by definition, the quintessential carnival celebration of the Madonie area. It takes place in Castellana Sicula, a small inland town in the province of Palermo, in the heart of the Madonie Park. For over half a century, it has been one of the most cherished events in the Sicilian popular calendar. Every year, during the carnival days, the streets of the historic center fill with colors, confetti, and music to welcome the traditional parade.
The history of the Castellana Sicula Carnival dates back to 1962, when a group of young people from Catholic Action created the first masks—including Topo Gigio and King Carnival—parading along the streets of the ancient procession with small hand-pulled carts. From that spontaneous initiative, an event was born that, edition after edition, has grown to become the reference carnival for the entire Madonie region. In 2025, the festival celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The heart of the event is the grand parade of papier-mâché allegorical floats, crafted over months of work in local workshops, accompanied by masquerade groups and marching bands. The festival involves not only the locals but also numerous masked groups from neighboring Madonie towns—including Petralia Sottana, Petralia Soprana, Bompietro, Blufi, Alimena, Caltavuturo, and Geraci Siculo—making the parade a true landmark event for the entire territory.
The procession travels through the main streets of the town, ending in the central squares, where the party continues with music, dancing, and DJ sets. In the weekends leading up to the main parade, masquerade balls and side events bring the village to life. The event is organized by the Pro Loco and the Youth Council of Castellana Sicula with the patronage of the Municipality.
More than just a village festival, the Madonie Carnival is an opportunity for connection and the celebration of the Madonie region's identity. The natural setting of the Madonie Park, among beech and chestnut forests, provides the backdrop for an event that combines popular tradition, artisanal creativity, and the participation of entire communities.
The 51st edition of the Madonie Carnival was held in Castellana Sicula on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The parade, originally scheduled for February 15, was postponed by one week due to adverse weather conditions.
The procession featured thirteen papier-mâché allegorical floats, which departed from the hamlet of Calcarelli and headed towards Piazza San Francesco di Paola. Masquerade groups from numerous Madonie towns participated in the parade, including Petralia Sottana, Petralia Soprana, Bompietro, Blufi, Alimena, Caltavuturo, and Geraci Siculo. The day concluded with music and DJ sets in the square, drawing a large turnout.
Castellana Sicula is located in the inland province of Palermo, within the Madonie Park. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli or Scillato exit), continuing along the Madonie provincial roads. The nearest train station is Roccapalumba-Alia.
Participation in the parade and square events is free.
During the parade days, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the areas outside the town. Warm clothing is recommended, given the altitude and the winter season.
