The annual sports day for students of the High Madonie
The Madoniadi is a historic student sports event held in the High Madonie region of Sicily, in the province of Palermo. Every year, the event gathers hundreds of students from local comprehensive schools for a grand celebration of school sports, focused on movement, fun, and social interaction. The event is held on a rotating basis among the Madonie municipalities, with the town of Bompietro being one of its most frequent hosts, welcoming students, teachers, and families from across the Sicilian hinterland.
The Madoniadi program centers on track and field and team sports. Participants compete in:
Participating schools come from numerous towns across the Madonie: the comprehensive institutes of Gangi and Geraci, Petralia Soprana-Bompietro-Petralia Sottana-Blufi, Castellana-Polizzi-Alimena, and Caltavuturo-Scillato-Sclafani Bagni. The event concludes with an awards ceremony for the schools and students who reached the podium in their respective disciplines.
The Madoniadi has its roots in the Pietro Paolo Brucato Memorial, created to honor the professor's memory and sustained over the years by the municipal administration of Bompietro. From a simple sports memorial, the initiative has grown into an eagerly awaited event for the entire region, capable of uniting different schools and municipalities under the banner of sport and friendship.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Madoniadi is primarily an opportunity for meeting and inclusion among young people from inland areas. As the Bompietro administration noted, "sport unites and represents a universal language": a day designed to promote well-being, fair play, and social interaction among students living in small towns that are often far apart. The organization involves the Municipality of Bompietro, the ASD Bompietro, the Misericordia, school administrators, and teachers, alongside many local volunteers.
The 2026 Madoniadi were held in Bompietro on June 4, 2026, with the participation of over 280 students from four comprehensive institutes: Gangi and Geraci, Petralia Soprana-Bompietro-Petralia Sottana-Blufi, Castellana-Polizzi-Alimena, and Caltavuturo-Scillato-Sclafani Bagni.
Students competed in speed and endurance races, high jump and long jump, shot put, volleyball, and 5-a-side football. The novelty of the year was the official inclusion of chess in the program, with school finals played as part of the national "Scuola Attiva Junior" project.
The Comprehensive Institute of Gangi and Geraci won the event, with numerous students reaching the podium. The day was organized by the Municipality of Bompietro with the ASD Bompietro, the Misericordia, school administrators, and teachers, with the support of Ama, Acqua Geraci, and numerous volunteers.
The Madoniadi is held on a rotating basis among the municipalities of the High Madonie. In Bompietro, the event takes place at the municipal sports facilities. Bompietro can be reached by car via the SS120, in the heart of the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo.
The event is reserved for students of the comprehensive schools in the Madonie region, accompanied by teachers and families. Admission for the public is free.
The event generally takes place in June, at the end of the school year.
