Italy's first Ocean M race on Lake Viverone
The M Lifesaving Challenge brings a unique format to Piverone, in the Province of Turin: the Ocean M, an elimination-style open-water rescue race that combines swimming, paddleboarding, and surfski along an M-shaped course set on the waters of Lake Viverone. The event takes place at the Lido di Anzasco, a lakeside area of Piverone overlooking one of the most picturesque lakes in the Canavese region, with the goal of blending sport, local culture, entertainment, safety, nature, and public engagement.
Organized by the ASD Nuotatori Canavesani, the event offers a spectacular format that is easy to follow from the shore: athletes compete in group heats, with direct clashes and finals decided by mere seconds. Alongside the main competition, the M Swim Challenge opens the day to those wishing to try open-water swimming without the competitive pressure, while a significant space is dedicated to inclusion, with athletes with disabilities competing alongside their partners.
The M Lifesaving Challenge is more than just a race: the public village, the food village, the Family & Kids area, and the Dialoghi sul Lago—discussions on the environment, water safety, sports, and community—turn the day into a modern local festival, attracting over a thousand people to Piverone, including athletes, families, and enthusiasts. The event concludes with a sunset DJ set by the lake.
Nestled between the Ivrea morainic amphitheater and the hills of the Canavese, Lake Viverone is a natural and tourist destination on the border between the Provinces of Turin and Biella. The Lido di Anzasco, with its beaches and clear waters, provides the ideal setting for a discipline that focuses on the relationship between humans, water, and the environment.
The first edition of the M Lifesaving Challenge took place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Lido di Anzasco in Piverone, on Lake Viverone, marking the debut of the Ocean M in Italy. Over a thousand people, including athletes, support staff, families, and enthusiasts, followed the day's events, with the participation of 16 sports clubs from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, and Spain, and the support of over 30 volunteers for organization and safety.
The elimination-style race combined swimming, paddleboarding, and surfski along the characteristic M-shaped course traced on the lake. Great attention was also paid to inclusion, with athletes with disabilities competing alongside their partners, and to the M Swim Challenge, the open-water swim open to all.
Throughout the day, the M Swim Challenge (open-water swim) and the Dialoghi sul Lago also took place, featuring discussions on the environment, water safety, sports, and the local area (including guest Paolo Ghiggio).
The race includes a full course with swimming (300m open water), paddleboarding (600m), surfski (800m), and transitions, with group heats of 8 in an elimination format and separate men's and women's brackets.
