The charity Carnival bean feast in the Cervo Valley
The Lorazzo Inferiore Alpine Bean Festival is one of the most cherished events of the Carnival season in Andorno Micca, a town in the Cervo Valley in the province of Biella, nestled at the foot of the Biellese Prealps in the heart of Piedmont. The event takes place in the small hamlet of Lorazzo Inferiore and draws families and residents from across the valley every year, turning a late-winter day into a moment of shared celebration.
The heart of the event is the great bean feast, a signature dish of Alpine and peasant culinary tradition. Volunteers prepare over one hundred kilos of beans in ten large pots, slow-cooking them according to an ancient recipe. The distribution of the steaming dish is the most anticipated moment of the afternoon, when the hamlet fills with people queuing with bowls in hand, fully immersed in the Carnival spirit.
The Alpine Bean Festival is organized by the local group "La Cricca d'Andrach Söta" for purely charitable purposes: all proceeds from the day are donated to support the community and local solidarity initiatives. It is this spirit of volunteerism and generosity that makes the event particularly dear to the inhabitants of Andorno Micca and the Cervo Valley.
The day is not just about food. In the afternoon, before the dish is served, there are games, entertainment, and surprises for children, making the event perfect for the whole family. Parents and children participate together in the cheerful and welcoming atmosphere typical of village festivals in the Biella area.
Andorno Micca, also known as the home of the inventor Pietro Micca and for its tradition linked to Ratafià liqueur, is a village in the Biellese mountains that proudly preserves its customs. The Lorazzo Inferiore Alpine Bean Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the identity of the Cervo Valley, savoring a simple, genuine dish while experiencing the hospitality of a Piedmontese mountain community.
The Alpine Bean Festival takes place during the Carnival period (between late February and early March), on a Sunday afternoon. Children's entertainment begins in the early afternoon, while the bean distribution takes place in the late afternoon.
