About Loranzè Carnival

Every year, as winter draws to a close, the small village of Loranzè transforms into the beating heart of the Canavese Carnival. Amidst confetti, traditional charity bean feasts, costume parades, and the iconic duo of the General and the Miller's Daughter, the local Pro Loco revives a tradition dating back to 1968. It is a deeply participatory community festival, where locals gather in the town square for days of joy, gastronomy, and historical re-enactment, fully embracing the spirit of the nearby Ivrea celebrations.

The Loranzè Carnival: A Canavese Tradition

In the heart of the Canavese region, just a few kilometers from Ivrea, the village of Loranzè (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont) celebrates its historic Carnival every year. Organized by the Pro Loco of Loranzè, the event is one of the most cherished highlights of the Canavese carnival season: for a few days, this small town of just over a thousand inhabitants comes alive with masks, music, and vibrant colors.

The General and the Miller's Daughter: Historic Figures

True to the traditions of the Canavese region, inspired by the famous Historic Carnival of Ivrea, the Loranzè Carnival revolves around two symbolic figures: the General and the Miller's Daughter (Mugnaia), sometimes accompanied by the Toniotto and the Grand Chancellor. Each year, the community selects the individuals who will embody these roles; a historical record, kept in the "Book of Minutes of the Loranzè Carnival," has documented them since 1968. The General leads the festivities in full dress uniform, while the Miller's Daughter is the folk heroine representing the town's spirit of freedom and redemption.

A Community Festival of Parades and Bean Feasts

The Loranzè Carnival program weaves together the classic elements of a Canavese festival: the charity bean feast (fagiolata) with the distribution of traditional beans, costume parades through the village streets, children's entertainment with confetti and streamers, and social gatherings that bring together young and old. It is a community-scale carnival, where the local atmosphere and warm hospitality set it apart from larger, more commercial events.

When It Takes Place

The 2026 edition is scheduled for the weekend of February 28 and March 1, 2026, with a preview on Friday, February 27. Loranzè remains an unmissable stop for those wishing to experience the Canavese Carnival in its most authentic, village-style version—far from the crowds but rich in tradition.
