Great music featuring international artists and young talents in the most beautiful settings of Livorno
The Livorno Music Festival & Summer Academy is one of the most prestigious events in the Tuscan musical summer. Organized by the Associazione Amici della Musica di Livorno and artistically directed by cellist Vittorio Ceccanti, the festival takes place every year between mid-August and early September, turning the city into a true musical laboratory. Founded in 2011, it has grown to become a benchmark for classical and chamber music, recognized among Italy's historic festivals for its exceptional artistic quality.
The formula that makes the festival unique is the blend of concerts and advanced training. On one hand, a season of over twenty concerts brings world-renowned soloists and ensembles to Livorno; on the other, the Summer Academy offers around thirty instrumental masterclasses and musical interpretation courses, led by dozens of international-level teachers. Young musicians from over thirty countries have the opportunity to perform as soloists with the orchestra or in chamber ensembles, fostering an authentic intergenerational exchange between established masters and emerging talents.
One of the event's strengths is the choice of venues, which highlight the historical and architectural heritage of Livorno and its province. Concerts are held in evocative locations such as the Fortezza Vecchia, the Teatro Goldoni, the Church of San Ferdinando, the Museum of Natural History of the Mediterranean, and other city mansions and spaces. In recent years, the festival has expanded its reach beyond city limits, reaching Suvereto, Pontedera, and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago such as Elba and Capraia.
The Livorno Music Festival has achieved one of the highest scores for artistic quality in the ministerial call for proposals dedicated to historic Italian festivals, confirming the role the event plays in the national cultural landscape. For the city of Livorno and the entire Province of Livorno in Tuscany, it represents a summer appointment capable of combining cultural tourism, regional promotion, and high-level musical education.
The 16th edition of the Livorno Music Festival & Summer Academy is held in Livorno from August 14 to September 8, 2026, under the artistic direction of Vittorio Ceccanti. The program includes over 24 concerts with the participation of approximately 200 artists, hosted in the city's most significant cultural venues. In parallel, the Summer Academy offers 30 advanced instrumental and musical interpretation courses, led by 35 internationally renowned musicians, with opportunities for young talents to perform as soloists with the orchestra or in chamber ensembles.
Dates and programs for individual concerts of the 16th edition will be announced by the organization once the full calendar is defined. The general festival dates (August 14 to September 8, 2026) and the artistic direction of Vittorio Ceccanti are confirmed.
The 2026 edition features over 24 concerts with approximately 200 artists in Livorno's most significant cultural venues, alongside 30 masterclasses taught by 35 international teachers. The detailed calendar, including locations, times, and performers, will be published on the official website in the weeks leading up to the festival.
