The Passion of Christ in living tableaux through the alleys of the ancient village
The Living Via Crucis of Stella Cilento is a scenic re-enactment of the Passion of Christ that, every year during Holy Week, brings the streets of the small Municipality of Stella Cilento, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of inland Campania, to life. It is not a theatrical performance in the strict sense, but a collective rite: the participants are the inhabitants of the village themselves, wearing historical costumes and embodying the stations of the Calvary before an audience that walks alongside them.
The distinctive feature of this performance is the decision to forgo a stage. The route is itinerant: it starts from the Villetta Comunale on Via Roma and touches the most iconic spots of the ancient village, among narrow alleys, stone arches, stairways, and small squares. The lights are dimmed, the path is marked by torches and essential scenic elements, and each station becomes a moment of shared reflection. The village's everyday spaces—a staircase, a churchyard, a dry-stone wall—take on the function of natural scenery for one evening.
In Cilento, Holy Week has always been a time of strong popular participation, and living Via Crucis processions represent one of its most widespread expressions: from Agropoli to Pisciotta, from Casal Velino to Omignano, from Ceraso to Ortodonico, dozens of communities stage the Passion on the same days. The one in Stella Cilento fits into this fabric with a deliberately intimate dimension, suited to a village of a few hundred inhabitants, where the preparation of the event—costumes, rehearsals, set-ups—involves families, young people, and volunteers for weeks.
The production is managed by the Associazione Oltre la Scena, a local theater company that handles the direction, the management of the participants, and the construction of the sets. Collaboration with the local community and the parish ensures the initiative maintains that devotional and cultural character that distinguishes it from a simple performance.
Stella Cilento is located at an altitude of approximately 386 meters, in a panoramic position on the hills overlooking the Cilento sea, within the territory of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The municipality, which has just over six hundred inhabitants, includes the hamlets of Amalafede, Caselle, Droro, Fornari, Guarrazzano, and San Giovanni Cilento, and its patron saint is Saint Nicholas of Bari, celebrated on December 6th. Those arriving for the Via Crucis thus also find the opportunity to discover an authentic village of the Cilento hinterland, a short distance from the beaches of Casal Velino and Ascea and the archaeological area of Velia.
In a region where popular theatricality is part of everyday language, the Living Via Crucis of Stella Cilento offers a more intimate experience compared to larger performances: no crowds, no grandstands, but an entire village accompanying the public along a symbolic path. For the visitor, Italian or foreign, it is a direct way to understand how religious devotion in Southern Italy has historically expressed itself through the body, costume, and stage.
On Sunday, March 29, 2026, coinciding with Palm Sunday, Stella Cilento hosted its Living Via Crucis. The meeting point was set at the Villetta Comunale on Via Roma, from where the procession of actors and the public departed.
The production, signed by the Associazione Oltre la Scena, focused on a succession of living tableaux and a route with detailed scenery, capable of transforming the village spaces into an open-air theater: each station became a moment of shared reflection, where spirituality, memory, and cultural identity intertwined. The performance was part of the dense calendar of living Via Crucis processions that, during Holy Week 2026, involved numerous municipalities in Cilento—including Agropoli, Pisciotta, Ceraso, Omignano, Casal Velino, and Ortodonico.
Access was free and open to all, without reservation.
