The Passion of Christ comes to life in the alleys of the Nebrodi village on Palm Sunday
The Living Via Crucis of San Salvatore di Fitalia is one of the most anticipated events of Holy Week in the Nebrodi mountains, in the heart of the province of Messina, Sicily. Every year, on Palm Sunday, the small village gathers to re-enact the Passion of Christ along the streets and squares of the historic center, which are transformed for the occasion into a grand, natural open-air stage.
The performance involves over 200 actors, including adults and children from the entire community: from the apostles to the Cyrenian, from Veronica to Pontius Pilate, from Caiaphas to Mary Magdalene, as well as Roman soldiers, the thieves, the pious women, and local families. The scene unfolds through the key moments of the Gospel narrative, accompanied by the local marching band and a sound system that guides the audience along the route.
More than just a theatrical performance, the Living Via Crucis is a journey of faith and shared emotion: an occasion where the entire population of San Salvatore di Fitalia, supported by the SS. Salvatore and Santa Maria Parish and the municipal administration, puts its devotion on display. The event is curated down to the smallest detail, from costumes to direction, and is held in memory of director Sergio Catania, the historic artistic guide of the event.
Despite taking place in a town of only a few hundred inhabitants, the event attracts thousands of people, many from outside the province, drawn by the authenticity of the re-enactment and the charm of the Nebrodi village alleys. The organization involves volunteers, local associations, the Pro Loco, law enforcement, and the Red Cross in a great collective effort that renews this Sicilian Holy Week tradition every year.
The 2026 Living Via Crucis in San Salvatore di Fitalia took place on Sunday, April 1, on Palm Sunday, recording a great success with the public. The performance, inspired by the Gospel of John, involved over 200 actors from the community, accompanied by the "Vincenzo Bellini" marching band and supported by volunteers, associations, the Pro Loco, the Red Cross, and law enforcement. The edition was dedicated to the memory of Sergio Catania, the event's historic director.
The day opened in the morning with the procession and religious services. In the afternoon, the Living Via Crucis took place, inspired by the Gospel of John, along the streets of the historic center.
The performance was organized by the SS. Salvatore and Santa Maria Parish, led by Archpriest Placido D'Omina, with the support of the municipal administration.
