The Passion of Christ performed through the streets of the Nebrodi village on Palm Sunday
The Living Via Crucis of Longi is one of the most heartfelt traditions of Holy Week in this small town in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. Every year, on the evening of Palm Sunday, the village's historic center comes alive with a procession of performers staging the Passion of Christ: a historical and spiritual re-enactment that weaves together the faith, culture, and identity of the town.
Along the streets and squares of the village, dozens of volunteers and performers in period costumes bring the scenes of the Passion to life. The narrative follows texts taken from the four Gospels, marked by the stations of the Via Crucis, from the entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion. The natural setting of the historic center, with its narrow alleys, stairways, and ancient stones, helps create an intense atmosphere of light and shadow that deeply moves all who attend.
The event is the result of a collective effort by the entire town and is organized by the Municipality of Longi in collaboration with the San Michele Arcangelo Parish and with the support of the BCC Valle del Fitalia-Longi. The commitment and dedication of the many volunteers and performers make this appointment possible every year, representing a moment of strong cohesion for the entire community.
Nestled on a natural terrace in the Eastern Nebrodi, in the Fitalia river valley and at the foot of the Rocche del Crasto, Longi is a village of ancient origins that retains a discreet charm. The Mother Church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, with its 17th-century carved wooden choir, dominates the town square. Attending the Living Via Crucis is also an opportunity to discover this corner of inland Sicily, amidst wild nature, religious traditions, and local products like the Nebrodi black pig.
On Sunday, March 29, 2026, on the occasion of Palm Sunday, the historic center of Longi hosted a new edition of the Living Via Crucis, starting at 8:30 PM. The village streets transformed into a natural stage for the Passion of Christ, interpreted by numerous performers in period costumes.
The re-enactment, marked by readings from the four Gospels, combined faith, culture, and a sense of community in a evocative journey through light and shadow. The event was organized by the Municipality of Longi with the San Michele Arcangelo Parish and the support of the BCC Valle del Fitalia-Longi.
