The sacred representation of the Passion of Christ through the streets of Zapponeta
In the heart of Holy Week, the small town of Zapponeta, overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia in the province of Foggia, Apulia, gathers for one of its most intense traditions: the Living Passion. This itinerant sacred performance retraces the final hours of Jesus of Nazareth's life, from his entry into Jerusalem to the crucifixion, staged along the town's streets and squares.
What makes this event unique is the involvement of the entire community: hundreds of local performers bring the characters of the Gospel story to life in a choral work that spans all generations. Ten-year-olds and eighty-year-olds act side by side, while local bricklayers, carpenters, artisans, and seamstresses spend weeks creating sets and costumes. It is a collective effort that, as the parish has often emphasized, becomes an opportunity for social cohesion and the transmission of Easter values.
The performance begins in Piazza Aldo Moro and winds through the town center, drawing the spectator into a journey that follows the Stations of the Passion. The event is organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Parish with the patronage of the Municipality of Zapponeta, and the script, direction, and set design are curated by Father Pasquale Paloscia together with Nunzia D'Aluisio and the catechists. New scenic elements are added year after year, crafted with the help of local artisans, to make the reconstruction increasingly faithful and moving.
The Living Passion is not just a show, but a moment of strong identity for Zapponeta: it opens the Holy Week celebrations and attracts residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the Foggia area. The solemn atmosphere, the silence of the crowd along the route, and the attention to detail make this event one of the most well-attended religious re-enactments in the lower Tavoliere delle Puglie.
The Living Passion of Zapponeta reached its eleventh edition in 2026. Initially planned for Friday, March 27, the sacred performance was postponed to Monday, March 30 due to adverse weather conditions, starting at 5:00 PM from Piazza Aldo Moro.
Once again, the entire Zapponeta community mobilized: hundreds of participants, led by the organizing team of Father Pasquale Paloscia and Nunzia D'Aluisio, brought the story of the Passion to life along the streets of the center. The 2026 edition saw the introduction of new scenic elements, the result of the work of local artisans, which joined those from previous years to make the reconstruction even more authentic and engaging.
Performance originally scheduled for Friday, March 27, and postponed to March 30 due to bad weather. Organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Parish with the patronage of the Municipality of Zapponeta.
