The itinerant sacred representation held on Palm Sunday in the historic center of Salento
The Living Passion of Matino is much more than a simple re-enactment: it is a continuous, uninterrupted narrative where the spectator walks alongside the characters, personally experiencing the emotion of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every year, on Palm Sunday, the historic center of Matino—a small town in the province of Lecce in the heart of Salento—transforms into a large open-air theater where faith, folk tradition, and art intertwine in one great story.
The performance unfolds like a walking poem that traverses the alleys, squares, and picturesque corners of the ancient town. The audience follows the procession from station to station, moving from urban spaces to the natural scenery of the eucalyptus hill. The main stages of the route are:
Behind the approximately twenty scenes of this sacred representation lies the work of hundreds of people: actors and extras, as well as makeup artists, costume designers, set designers, electricians, and artisans who renew costumes, settings, and staging every year. The event is promoted by the Joannes Paulus II Social Promotion Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Matino, and involves the entire community in a great act of collective participation. President Gianfranco Quintana has often emphasized that the secret of the event is the teamwork of the entire town.
Located just a few kilometers from the Ionian Sea, in southern Salento in the province of Lecce, Matino preserves a compact historic center rich in views that become the ideal stage for this now-established tradition. Over the years, the Living Passion has established itself as one of the most heartfelt events of the Salento Holy Week, capable of attracting thousands of spectators from across the province and Puglia. It is an opportunity to discover the village, its atmosphere, and the popular devotion that still animates the town's streets today.
The 15th edition of the Living Passion of Matino was held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, on the occasion of Palm Sunday. The sacred, itinerant, and uninterrupted performance crossed the historic center and the eucalyptus hill, re-enacting the stages of the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ before thousands of spectators.
The performance unfolded as one great journey through the town, stage by stage:
The entire event was organized by the Joannes Paulus II Social Promotion Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Matino.
Matino is located in the province of Lecce, in lower Salento. By car, take the Lecce–Gallipoli expressway and exit at Matino; the nearest train stations are served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est. The performance is itinerant and crosses the historic center: it is recommended to park in areas outside the center and reach the starting point on foot.
The event has free admission. The performance takes place on Palm Sunday, generally starting in the late afternoon (in recent editions from 5:00 PM). It is recommended to arrive early to follow the procession from the very first scenes.
Wear comfortable shoes to follow the route on foot through the alleys and the climb toward the eucalyptus hill. The event takes place largely outdoors: plan your clothing based on the evening weather conditions.
