Salento's pizzica in the city of ceramics
Every summer, La Notte della Taranta, Italy's largest festival dedicated to folk music, transforms Salento into a long, collective ritual of pizzica and tradition. Before the famous final Concertone in Melpignano, the Itinerant Festival visits around twenty town squares in the province of Lecce, and one of the stops is Cutrofiano, a town in lower Salento, Puglia. For one night, Piazza Municipio and the town center fill with tambourines, violins, accordions, and voices, with free admission until late at night.
Cutrofiano is one of the most characteristic towns in central-southern Salento, in the province of Lecce, famous for its centuries-old ceramic tradition: here, the art of potters has created a heritage now preserved in the Ceramic Museum and celebrated every August by the historic Craft Ceramic Exhibition. The town is part of the Grecรฌa Salentina area and shares its musical and folk identity, made of pizzica, work songs, and town square festivals. It is no coincidence that Cutrofiano is one of the most heartfelt stops of the Itinerant Festival, where the music of the Taranta meets the artisan and rural soul of the territory.
The Cutrofiano stage is part of the Itinerant Festival circuit, which visits about twenty Salento municipalities every year, bringing pizzica pizzica and its influences to the public squares. The itinerant evenings are free and open to everyone, culminating in the grand final Concertone in Melpignano, in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators. The event is organized by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation together with the municipalities of the network, including Cutrofiano.
The twenty-ninth edition of the festival has the Mediterranean as its central theme, understood not as a border but as a millenary space of encounters, migrations, and intertwining cultures. The 2026 Maestro Concertatore is Ermal Meta, an artist of Albanian origin who grew up in Italy, who authentically embodies this theme. The final Concertone is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Melpignano; the Cutrofiano stage is confirmed for Saturday, August 8, 2026. The detailed program for the Cutrofiano evening, including artists and times, will be announced by the Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event.
The heart of La Notte della Taranta is the pizzica, the ancient therapeutic dance of tarantism that has become a symbol of Salento worldwide. During the itinerant evenings, traditional groups, young artists, and projects that combine folk music with contemporary sounds take the stage, often preceded by a dance workshop led by Taranta dancers, which turns the square into a large space for participation. The audience dances together in a choral embrace that unites residents, tourists, and enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad.
The Cutrofiano stage of the La Notte della Taranta 2026 Itinerant Festival is confirmed for Saturday, August 8, 2026. The evening is part of the twenty-ninth edition of the festival, this year dedicated to the theme of the Mediterranean as a space for encounter between peoples and cultures, with Ermal Meta in the role of Maestro Concertatore for the final Concertone in Melpignano (August 22, 2026).
Like all itinerant stages, the Cutrofiano event will have free admission, featuring pizzica, Salento folk music, and Mediterranean influences in the town square, preceded by the traditional dance workshop. The detailed program for the Cutrofiano evening, including artists and times, will be communicated by the La Notte della Taranta Foundation in the weeks leading up to the event.
Cutrofiano is located in lower Salento, about 30 km south of Lecce, in Puglia. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Galatina and Maglie; the most convenient train station is Lecce, which is connected to the area by Ferrovie del Sud Est lines and bus services.
The Itinerant Festival stage has free admission and takes place in the evening, generally starting at 8:30 PM, in Piazza Municipio and the town center. It is recommended to arrive early to find a spot and parking.
Bring comfortable shoes for dancing the pizzica, water, and, for those arriving from afar, consider an overnight stay in Cutrofiano, Galatina, Maglie, or Lecce. In August, Cutrofiano also hosts the historic Craft Ceramic Exhibition: an opportunity to combine music and local craftsmanship.
