The live re-enactment of the Passion of Christ in the historic center of Ascoli Satriano
The Living Passion is a sacred performance that, every year on the eve of Holy Week, brings the historic center of Ascoli Satriano to life—a town in the Tavoliere delle Puglie, in the province of Foggia. On the evening of Palm Sunday, the village streets turn into a grand open-air theater where the Passion of Christ is re-enacted, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the trial, the climb to Calvary, and the crucifixion.
The performance is itinerant: the audience follows the actors from scene to scene, traversing the alleys, stairways, and squares of the ancient center of Ascoli Satriano, one of the most evocative villages in the Dauni Mountains. Dozens of costumed performers bring the evangelical scenes to life—from the apostles to the Roman soldiers, from the priests of the Sanhedrin to the crowd—in a journey that blends popular devotion with theatrical expression.
The event is organized by the cultural-theatrical association Le stelle di Orione, which is linked to the local Orionine community. Over the years, they have grown the event into one of the most anticipated appointments of the Easter period in Ascoli Satriano. The attention to costumes, set design, and acting makes the Living Passion a moment of deep participation for the entire community.
Living Passion performances are a deeply rooted tradition throughout Puglia and Southern Italy, where sacred theater and popular religiosity intertwine in the days leading up to Easter. In Ascoli Satriano, this tradition is renewed in the heart of a village with a millennial history—the ancient Ausculum—offering residents and visitors an intense and immersive experience. Admission is free, and the event takes place in the evening, when the lighting and atmosphere of the historic center enhance the evangelical narrative.
