The July 2nd votive feast in the heart of Cefalù
The Gesù Salvatore alla Torre Celebrations are among the most cherished religious traditions in Cefalù, located in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. Every year, from June 23rd to July 2nd, the neighborhood surrounding the Gesù Salvatore alla Torre church and the Istituto Artigianelli gathers for ten days of celebrations that weave together faith, historical memory, and community life.
The festival is rooted in the dramatic events of 1837. That year, a cholera epidemic sweeping through Sicily threatened to reach Cefalù. The population invoked the protection of the Savior, and Bishop Pietro Tasca ordered a solemn procession in his honor. The city made a vow: July 2nd has since been the date commemorating that pact and the deliverance from the contagion. The church itself was built as a sign of gratitude and thanksgiving. 2026 marks the 189th anniversary of the vow, a testament to an unbroken devotion.
The program alternates between liturgical moments and popular events held between the Gesù Salvatore alla Torre Church and the Istituto Artigianelli Church, run by the Giuseppini del Murialdo. The opening on June 23rd is marked by the unfurling of the banner, the Holy Rosary, and Holy Mass. In the following days, morning and evening masses, the recitation of the Rosary and the Chaplet take place, while the institute's internal courtyard hosts recreational activities such as briscola and burraco tournaments, moments that strengthen the bonds of the district.
The most anticipated moment is July 2nd. The day begins with morning Holy Mass; in the afternoon, the "Santa Cecilia" band marches through the parish streets. This is followed by the blessing of the bearers, the translation of the statue, and Mass in the institute's small courtyard. In the evening, the solemn final procession begins, accompanying the simulacrum of the Savior along the streets of the neighborhood—via Giovanni XXIII, via Roma, via San Pasquale, via Pintorno, and via Vazzana—until it returns to the Gesù Salvatore church. It is a choral ritual involving confraternities, the faithful, and residents, marked by the traditional cry "Evviva Gesù Sabbaturi".
More than just a patronal feast, the Gesù Salvatore alla Torre Celebrations represent an intangible heritage of the Municipality of Cefalù: a living bond between the community and its history, guarded by the SS. Salvatore alla Torre Parish and passed down from generation to generation. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic Cefalù, far from the most crowded tourist routes, made of narrow alleys, votive shrines, and popular devotion.
The 2026 program opens on June 23rd at the Gesù Salvatore alla Torre Church with the unfurling of the banner, the Holy Rosary, the Chaplet, and Holy Mass. From June 24th to 30th, celebrations also move to the Istituto Artigianelli Church, with morning and evening masses, recitation of the Rosary, and activities in the internal courtyard, including briscola tournaments and the "Burraco Tournament – 1st Fabrizio Piscitello Memorial".
On July 1st, the "Città di Cefalù" brass band parades through the city streets. On July 2nd, the culminating day, after the morning Mass, the "Santa Cecilia" band enlivens the afternoon; this is followed by the blessing of the bearers, the translation of the statue, Mass in the courtyard, and, in the evening, the solemn final procession along via Giovanni XXIII, via Roma, via San Pasquale, via Pintorno, and via Vazzana. Spiritual guidance is provided by Father Alessandro Palladino.
Cefalù is easily accessible by train: the railway station is located on the Palermo-Messina line, just a few minutes from the center. By car, take the A20 motorway (Cefalù exit) or the SS113 state road. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi, about an hour away.
The celebrations are concentrated around the Gesù Salvatore alla Torre Church and the Istituto Artigianelli, in the neighborhood between via Roma and via Giovanni XXIII.
Admission to all events is free. For the July 2nd procession, it is recommended to arrive early in the afternoon. During the peak summer season, it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance.
