A living nativity scene in the historic center of Casarano, set amidst underground oil mills and ancient courtyards
Every winter, from Christmas Day to Epiphany, the historic center of Casarano, in the province of Lecce, lights up with the magic of Christmas. The Living Nativity of the Oil Mills and Courtyards has become one of the most anticipated Christmas events in Salento: a walking route through the alleys of the old town, illuminated by thousands of lights, where dozens of costumed actors bring the Nativity and the life of yesteryear back to life.
The event's name reveals its soul: the nativity scene winds through underground oil mills carved into the rock, courtyard houses, and hidden gardens that define the historic fabric of Casarano. These spaces, once the heart of peasant economy and olive oil production, become the natural backdrop for the performance. Visitors pass through artisan workshops, scenes of daily life, moments of spirituality, and carefully reconstructed settings, leading up to the Nativity grotto.
Along the route, you will encounter dozens of living tableaux: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the spinner, the baker, and other ancient trades of Salento, as well as Herod's palace, the temple, and the Holy Family. The participation is collective: local clubs, sports associations, schools, and families collaborate every year on the setup, making the nativity a true community project.
The popular atmosphere is intertwined with a strong spiritual dimension, curated by the "Cantico delle Creature" Franciscan Association, which organizes the event. The most solemn moment is the procession of the Three Wise Men on January 6th, who travel through the historic center carrying gifts to the grotto, accompanied by music and lights. Over the years, the event has also hosted rituals related to peace, such as the Lamp of Peace arriving from Santa Maria di Leuca.
The Casarano Living Nativity is part of the "Le Cittร dei Presepi" (Cities of Nativity Scenes) network, which unites various Salento municipalities in a single Christmas itinerary, and is accompanied by initiatives such as "Music and Poetry in the Christmas Village" and the "Forza Pace Nativity Marathon". Under the patronage of the Municipality of Casarano and the Province of Lecce, the event is an unmissable stop for those wanting to experience an authentic Apulian Christmas.
The 8th edition of the Living Nativity of the Oil Mills and Courtyards took place in Casarano between Christmas and Epiphany, confirming its status as one of the most visited Christmas events in lower Salento.
