About Living Nativity

In the days following Christmas, the historic center of Santa Maria la Fossa, located on the Volturno plain in the province of Caserta, transforms into a Bethlehem village. The Living Nativity, established in 2019 by a group of citizens, stages a life-sized Nativity scene between Via Municipio and Via Roma: about sixty performers bring to life the workshops of the blacksmith, carpenter, and baker, Herod's court in Piazza Europa, and the manger set up in the Don Bosco oratory behind the Basilica. Admission is free.

A life-sized Nativity in the heart of the village

Every year, in the days following Christmas, the historic center of Santa Maria la Fossa โ€” a small town in the province of Caserta, in Campania, overlooking the Volturno plain โ€” changes its appearance and becomes Bethlehem. The Living Nativity is not a simple theatrical performance: it is a walking route, alley by alley, where every corner tells a fragment of the Nativity. The life-sized reconstruction involves the streets and courtyards of the village, recreating the atmosphere of a village from two thousand years ago.

A journey through workshops and ancient crafts

The route mainly winds between Via Municipio and Via Roma, in the oldest part of the town. Along the way, visitors encounter the workshops of ancient crafts, where performers work in front of the public: the blacksmith hammering iron, the carpenter working wood, the baker pulling bread from the oven. These are not just scenic backdrops to be viewed from a distance, but spaces where you can stop, ask questions, and observe the gestures of the past up close. This participatory dimension makes the experience suitable for children, who can follow the story step by step.

Herod's court and the Nativity manger

One of the most scenic moments is Herod's court, set up in Piazza Europa: the king and his retinue welcome visitors in one of the largest spaces in the town before the path continues toward the conclusion. The Nativity manger is located in the "Don Bosco" oratory, behind the Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo: here, a narrator accompanies the central scene, and the performance closes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men. In total, about sixty performers bring the Nativity to life, all of whom are citizens of Santa Maria la Fossa.

An event born from the community

The "Presepe Vivente" group was formed in 2019 with the goal of bringing the Nativity representation back to the historic heart of the town, directly involving the inhabitants. The organization works together with the parish priest of the Basilica and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Santa Maria la Fossa. The format is typical of southern Italian living nativity scenes: no tickets, no reservations, a single evening where the entire town opens its doors to visitors. Admission has always been free.

The town and its Basilica

The Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo, built in 1084 on the ruins of a Lombard-era church, is the most important historical and artistic monument in Santa Maria la Fossa and the reference point around which much of the community life revolves. The town has a consolidated vocation for popular re-enactments: since 2012, the "Venerdรฌ Santo" group, in collaboration with the Basilica parish, has staged the Passion of Christ along the streets of the center with over one hundred performers. The Living Nativity represents the winter chapter of this same tradition made of popular theater, faith, and collective participation.

When it takes place

The most recent editions have focused on a single evening, always in the days between Christmas and the end of the year: December 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM, and December 27, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM. The dates for the next edition have not yet been announced by the Municipality or specialized portals; it is advisable to check for updates in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Tips for your visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the route is entirely on foot, along the streets and alleys of the historic center.
  • Dress warmly: the event takes place outdoors in the evening, when temperatures on the Volturno plain drop significantly.
  • Arrive at opening time to avoid crowds at the most popular scenes, particularly the Nativity manger.
  • The itinerary is designed for families: children especially appreciate the ancient craft workshops and the arrival of the Three Wise Men.
  • Park outside the center: during the evening, traffic in the historic core is restricted.

Living Nativity โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Living Nativity of Santa Maria la Fossa has not yet been announced. As of today, neither the Municipality nor the portals specializing in living nativity scenes in the province of Caserta have published dates, times, or a program for Christmas 2026. Based on previous editions, the performance is expected to take place in the days following Christmas, in a single evening along the route of the historic center, with free admission.

At the moment, there are no official communications regarding the 2026 edition of the Living Nativity of Santa Maria la Fossa. The specialized portal that collects living nativity scenes in the province of Caserta explicitly indicates that no performance is yet scheduled in the province for Christmas 2026/2027, and the Municipality's events page does not report any new dates.

Previous editions took place on a single evening between Christmas and New Year's, with the route starting from the historic center and concluding at the Nativity manger set up in the "Don Bosco" oratory, behind the Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta in Cielo. Updates are usually released in the weeks leading up to the holidays through the channels of the Municipality and the organizing group.
