About Living Nativity of Cattolica Eraclea

Every year during the Christmas season, the historic center of Cattolica Eraclea (Agrigento) transforms into an ancient Bethlehem for its Living Nativity, also known as the Festival of the Peoples. Throughout the alleys and courtyards of the charming Colli Corti district, dozens of costumed actors bring workshops, ancient trades, and scenes of daily life to life, leading up to the Nativity stable. Bagpipers, storytellers, live animals, and tastings of local products guide visitors on an emotional journey that culminates on January 6th with the arrival of the Three Wise Men.

A journey to ancient Bethlehem in the heart of Cattolica Eraclea

The Living Nativity of Cattolica Eraclea, in the province of Agrigento, is one of the most cherished Christmas events in the Sicilian hinterland. Set in the picturesque Colli Corti district, in the town's historic center, the event reconstructs ancient Bethlehem among the alleys, stairways, and courtyards of the old quarter, illuminated by lanterns and torches that create an authentic and intimate atmosphere.

Workshops, trades, and folk traditions

Along the route, dozens of costumed actors animate scenes of daily life from two thousand years ago. You will encounter the cobbler, the baker, the carpenter, the blacksmith, the farrier, and shepherds busy working wool and making cheese, while local products are offered for tasting in the inns. There is no shortage of bagpipers and storytellers, whose melodies accompany visitors toward the Nativity stable, the spiritual heart of the entire representation.

  • Faithful reconstruction of ancient workshops and trades
  • Costumed actors, live animals, and illuminated sets
  • Tastings of local products along the route
  • Visits to the nativity scenes at the Church of Purgatorio and the Museum of Vanished Civilizations

The procession of the Three Wise Men

The most anticipated moment is the arrival of the Three Wise Men, which takes place on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany. The procession starts from the Church of Purgatorio and reaches the Church of the Rosary, accompanied by a musical group, before continuing toward the stable for the tribute to the Baby Jesus. It is a ritual that involves the entire community and gives the nativity scene a strong sense of identity and religious significance.

A festival that unites the town

Organized through the commitment of local associations and numerous volunteers, the Living Nativity—also called the Festival of the Peoples—represents an opportunity for Cattolica Eraclea to gather and celebrate the historical heritage and folk traditions of Sicily. The ticketed event attracts numerous visitors every year from neighboring towns and the entire province of Agrigento.
