The Nativity comes to life in the narrow streets of the ancient village of Falcone
Every year, during the Christmas holidays, the ancient village of Casinello โ a small hamlet in the municipality of Falcone, overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Messina โ comes alive with one of the most evocative living nativity scenes in the region. Amidst stone houses, narrow alleys, and views that seem frozen in time, the re-enactment of the Nativity comes to life thanks to the work of many volunteers and costumed performers.
Visitors walk through a true traditional village, where every corner tells a story: the Holy Family in the grotto, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and numerous scenes of peasant and artisan life. Along the path, you will encounter traditional crafts carefully reconstructed, ancient tools for field and workshop work, live animals, and fires lit to warm the winter evenings.
The Casinello Living Nativity is organized by the San Giovanni Battista and Maria SS. Immacolata Parish in collaboration with local associations, and has become a staple of the Falcone Christmas calendar. The event involves the entire community: from the youngest to the oldest, everyone contributes to reviving the atmosphere and customs of the past. While Falcone also hosts a separate representation in the village of Belvedere, it is the one in Casinello that draws visitors from across the Messina area.
Visiting the Casinello Living Nativity means discovering a small village in Tyrrhenian Sicily at its most authentic and engaging moment. It is a family-friendly, free experience steeped in popular tradition, perfect for those who want to experience Christmas away from the main tourist crowds, amidst spirituality, rural culture, and the warmth of the Falcone community.
The 13th edition of the Living Nativity in the Ancient Village of Casinello was held during the 2025/2026 Christmas season, with three opening days: December 26, 2025, January 3, and January 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The representation, organized by the San Giovanni Battista and Maria SS. Immacolata Parish with local associations, brought the village alleys to life with Nativity scenes, traditional trades, and rural settings, concluding on the day of the Epiphany.
Falcone is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of the province of Messina, along the SS113 road. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Falcone exit. The Falcone train station is on the Messina-Palermo line. The village of Casinello is a hillside hamlet of the municipality.
The event generally takes place in the late afternoon and evening (approximately from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM). Admission is free.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking through the village alleys and warm clothing for the winter evenings.
