The Nativity comes to life within the walls of the La Grua Talamanca Castle
During the Christmas season, the La Grua Talamanca Castle in Carini, in the metropolitan city of Palermo, opens its courtyards and walkways to host one of the most beloved living nativity scenes in the region. The event transforms the manor into a small village of ancient Judea, where the birth of Jesus is represented with care and dedication by the local inhabitants.
The Castle of Carini is an exceptional example of Sicilian architecture: its origins date back to the Norman period, when it was built by the first feudal lord Rodolfo Bonello between 1075 and 1090, following Count Roger I. Over the centuries, the fortress has been enriched with Catalan, Renaissance, and 18th-century elements, becoming a stratification of styles that provides the perfect backdrop for the reenactment of the Nativity. Walking through its halls during the nativity scene means traversing both the history of Sicily and the story of Christmas.
The living nativity route carefully reconstructs the daily life of the past. Along the way, visitors encounter performers engaged in traditional crafts:
At the heart of it all is the sacred representation of the Nativity, which restores the most authentic and intimate meaning of Christmas.
Organized by the Associazione Collisioni ETS with the involvement of numerous local volunteers and performers, the living nativity of Carini is now a highly anticipated event that combines devotion, popular tradition, and heritage enhancement. The initiative helps promote the La Grua Talamanca Castle and the historic center of the Municipality of Carini, attracting families and curious visitors from all over the province of Palermo and Sicily.
For the 2025/2026 Christmas season, the La Grua Talamanca Castle in Carini once again hosted the living nativity, open on December 26, 2025, and January 1 and 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Along the route, visitors were able to admire scenes of the Nativity and ancient trades: the fabric market, washerwomen, the carpenter, the blacksmith, the greengrocer, the housewife preparing maccarruna, and the tavern. Admission, at the symbolic cost of 3 euros, could be booked online or purchased directly at the castle.
Carini is located about 30 km west of Palermo, easily accessible by car via the A29 motorway (Carini exit). By train, the Carini station is served by the Palermo-Trapani line. The La Grua Talamanca Castle is located in the town's historic center.
Admission has a symbolic cost of 3 euros. You can book online at carinicittaparlante.it or purchase tickets directly at the castle on opening days.
We recommend wearing comfortable and warm clothing, given the winter season and the partially outdoor areas of the castle.
