The literary festival of Alberona, in the Monti Dauni
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Libri nel Borgo is the literary festival that brings Alberona to life every summer—one of Italy's most beautiful villages, nestled in the heart of the Monti Dauni in the province of Foggia. Established in 2022, the event is conceived and organized by the UNESCO Club of Alberona in collaboration with the GnT Association and under the patronage of the Municipality of Alberona. It aligns with the programmatic goals of the FICLU (Italian Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Centres) regarding the 2030 Agenda.
The festival's hub is Piazza Civetta, which transforms for a few evenings into a small, open-air literary salon. Events also extend to other historic sites, such as Palazzo Civetta and the Church of San Rocco: a truly widespread festival where books become an opportunity to rediscover the alleys, fountains, and cozy atmosphere of this corner of inland Puglia.
The program alternates between book presentations and dialogues with authors, readings, live music, and meetings with journalists and local officials. Alongside the literary events, visitors can explore local craft exhibitions, traditional costume displays, and children's activities, making it an event designed for the whole family. Each edition revolves around a specific theme: in 2025, the guiding thread was «Returns», dedicated to themes of departure, reconnecting with one's roots, and the resilience of small villages.
More than just a book fair, Libri nel Borgo is a cultural project that celebrates the identity of the Daunian Subapennine and its community. The choice of Alberona, a village of only a few hundred inhabitants, speaks volumes about the festival's soul: bringing quality literature to small towns, far from major circuits, and restoring centrality to places and people. An appointment that, edition after edition, has become a landmark for the cultural summer in the province of Foggia and all of Puglia.
The UNESCO Club of Alberona has announced the fourth edition of Libri nel Borgo for summer 2026, confirming the continuation of the literary festival in the historic center of the Monti Dauni village. President Orfina Scrocco has anticipated that one evening will be dedicated to the memory of the local dialect poet Michele Urrasio, with experts invited to discuss his poetry and his value within the literary landscape. The exact dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: the event is expected to take place as usual in Piazza Civetta with book presentations, readings, and live music.
Alberona can be reached by car from the A16 motorway (Candela exit) or the SS17, heading up towards the Monti Dauni; the village is about an hour from Foggia. The nearest train station is in Foggia, from where you can continue by car or local bus services towards the Subapennine area.
The events take place outdoors in Piazza Civetta and the historic center and are generally free of charge.
Summer evenings at this altitude can be cool; a light jacket or sweater is recommended. The village offers various agriturismi and accommodations in the surrounding Monti Dauni area.
