About Borgo San Lorenzo Liberation Day

Every year on the third Sunday of September, Borgo San Lorenzo commemorates its Liberation, which took place on September 11, 1944. This is not the national April 25th holiday, but a deeply felt local tradition: a memorial mass for the fallen, a ceremony at the Town Hall, a parade with the town band, the laying of laurel wreaths at Resistance monuments, a community lunch, and the historic Coppa della Liberazione cycling race. 2026 marks the 81st anniversary, organized by the Municipality in collaboration with the ANPI.

A date the Mugello region will never forget

The Liberation Day Festival of Borgo San Lorenzo should not be confused with the national holiday on April 25th. It is a deeply felt local anniversary that, every year on the third Sunday of September, brings the entire community together to honor the memory of September 11, 1944, the day the capital of the Mugello region, in the Province of Florence, was liberated from Nazi-Fascist occupation. Organized by the Municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo together with the local branch of the ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans), the event reaches its 81st anniversary in 2026.

The official program

For years, the main day has followed a well-established ceremonial. It begins in the morning with a Memorial Mass for the fallen at the Pieve di San Lorenzo, followed by the official ceremony at the Town Hall, featuring speeches by the Mayor, the President of the City Council, and the ANPI, along with greetings from the Tuscan Historical Institute of the Resistance. A parade then moves from Piazza Dante, accompanied by the band, for the laying of laurel wreaths at the sites of memory: the Monument to the Fallen, the Resistance Monument in Piazza Martiri della Libertร , the Monument to Civilian Victims, the Alpine Troops Monument, and the Partisan Ossuary Chapel at the Misericordia cemetery.

The community celebration and the Coppa della Liberazione

Alongside the solemn events, the anniversary has always had a popular soul. The Liberation Lunch at the Area Ponterosso, hosted by the ANPI, is a traditional and convivial moment open to everyone. In the afternoon, the historic Coppa della Liberazione takes placeโ€”a national cycling race for the youth category that has enlivened the roads of the Mugello for decades, concluding with the awards ceremony at the Town Hall. During these days in September, the town experiences a busy season of events, from cultural initiatives at the Foro Boario to local festivities in the surrounding hamlets.

Why it is worth attending

Participating in the Liberation Day Festival of Borgo San Lorenzo means experiencing the living memory of a Tuscan community that paid a high price during the war. It is an opportunity to discover the authentic Mugello, far from the beaten tourist paths, amidst the history of the Resistance, civic tradition, and the warm, small-town atmosphere felt during the open-air lunch and along the cycling race route.
