The Leporano Carnival

The Leporano Carnival is the main masquerade festival in Leporano, a town on the Ionian coast in the province of Taranto, Apulia. Every year, during the carnival season, the town center transforms into a cheerful open-air stage where children, teenagers, and families gather to celebrate together in costume.

Where it takes place

The heart of the event is Piazza Maria Immacolata, the main square of Leporano, which for the occasion is filled with confetti, streamers, colors, and music. This is where the mask parade, entertainment, and festivities involving both adults and children are concentrated.

A community carnival

More than just a major tourist event, the Leporano Carnival is a deeply popular, local festival: it is primarily families, schools, and local associations that bring the event to life. The highlight traditionally falls on Shrove Tuesday, with a gathering in the square in the afternoon.

Atmosphere and tradition

Between colorful masks, costumed groups, music, and entertainment, the Leporano Carnival renews one of the most cherished traditions of the Apulian winter calendar every year. The 2026 edition

The 2026 edition took place on Tuesday, February 17th, Shrove Tuesday, with a gathering at 3:00 PM in Piazza Maria Immacolata. The theme chosen for the festival was "I tell of my land, its events, its colors, its people," an invitation to rediscover the identity and roots of the Leporano community through the playfulness of Carnival.

Despite its intimate scale, the Leporano Carnival is part of the rich carnival tradition of Apulia and the province of Taranto, a land of parades, masks, and joy.
