Salento craftsmanship and the Fiera dei Pupi in the city's Baroque heart

When December arrives, the historic center of Lecce, the capital of its namesake province and the heart of Salento, dons its most festive attire. Luminarie (light displays) sparkle along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and in Piazza Mazzini, the Christmas tree illuminates Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and the Baroque facades of Lecce stone provide a natural backdrop for one of the most magical times of the year. The Lecce Christmas Markets are not just a single event, but a mosaic of fairs, exhibitions, and installations that bring the city to life from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception through to Epiphany.
The city's living room, Piazza Sant'Oronzo, hosts traditional wooden chalets featuring local crafts: papier-mâché, terracotta, ceramics, and Lecce stone objects. Alongside these handmade goods, you will find food stalls offering regional specialties, from pasticciotti to mustazzoli, sweet taralli, and Salento wines. The "Che Tipico Natale" initiative complements the artisan stalls with tastings and small performances, while in Piazza Mazzini, a fair dedicated to toys, decorations, and gifts features a vintage 19th-century-style carousel that is a favorite among children.
The true jewel of Christmas in Lecce is the Fiera di Santa Lucia, known as the Fiera dei Pupi, set up in the evocative Chiostro dei Teatini. This exhibition is dedicated to Salento's master puppet makers, whose tradition is rooted in centuries of history. Here, you can purchase handcrafted papier-mâché and terracotta nativity figurines, along with sacred figures and scenes of daily life created using techniques passed down through generations. The fair is an unmissable stop for anyone looking to build or enrich their nativity scene with authentic pieces from Salento.
The Christmas trail continues with the Salento Craft Fair in the Chiostro dei Teatini, the Creativity Market on Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Trinchese managed by local artists and hobbyists, and numerous nativity scene exhibitions scattered throughout the churches and palaces of the city center. Between Lecce stone, carved wood, textiles, embroidery, and ceramics, Lecce confirms its reputation as a city of artistic craftsmanship.
Strolling through the Lecce Christmas markets means immersing yourself in the soul of Salento. Admission to the open-air exhibition areas is free, and the atmosphere—filled with lights, music, and scents—is perfect for families, couples, and curious travelers alike. It is yet another reason to discover the Baroque beauty of Lecce in its winter attire.
The Lecce Christmas Markets return, as per established tradition, during the Advent and Christmas holiday period of 2026 in the heart of the historic center of Salento. At the moment, the precise dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published.
Based on previous editions, the event is expected to feature the artisan chalets in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the historic Fiera di Santa Lucia dei Pupi in the Chiostro dei Teatini, the Creativity Market, and exhibitions of papier-mâché and terracotta nativity scenes.
